Question

Maybe minor issue with scan disk

Jul 8, 2017 3:02PM PDT

Just because, I decided to run the chkdsk /f /r /x routine. Normally it takes about an hour and a half. After a couple of hours I stated to monitor. It took 4 hours. Desktop came up. Checking event viewer gave an error regarding windows update. Don't remember the exact words. Checking windows update, there was a failed attempt at updating Windows Defender. Opened Windows Defender and it failed to update. Decided to reboot. Here I noticed some odd messages before maybe a third message that a repair was being performed. Afterwords, computer booted to desktop as normal. Have since rebooted twice without issue. I was able to update windows defender now through windows update. So that issue was resolved.

Should I be concerned, OR, did the scan disk do what it should have and that's the end of it. Windows 10 with creators update. All windows update.

Thanks in advance

Both your disk are showing a high number of disk errors.

I wonder if that has something to do with that mixed ram your using.

Consider getting a match pair of ram sticks.

If you do that and those disk errors keep going up it might be time for replacements.

I had gone to the "Crucial" web site when I first bought my computer to get something that was compatible. But I understand the point about buying a "pair".

Thanks for replying

Chkdsk Repairs Stuff...
Jul 8, 2017 3:45PM PDT

When repairs are made by Chkdsk, it takes longer and you may see messages about what's going on. Various file indexes, damaged files, and sometimes, bad sectors on the hard drive are repaired and may need restarts to get up and running correctly again. A reboot after running Chkdsk is usually a good idea.

That said, if the hard drive is failing, then these types of issues may come up again. Only time will tell whether it was a one-time thing or the problems return. Checking the Chkdsk report logs in Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Event Viewer can give you a little more knowledge about what was done during the scan.

Hope this helps.

Answer
I should have...

I should have written "is it a Seagate?" in my first reply but here we are and the Seagate is a model from 2011 so you may have a real issue there. There are drive tests you can perform but at the shop we don't since the cost of test is more than replacing a suspect drive (yes that can upset folk that want testing done.)

OK, from the speccy, my reading. These are my thoughts about what I would do if my PC.

1. The Seagate drive. Seriously consider replacing with a SSD or another maker.
Looking at the SMART Values in the report, it does look to be a drive with minor errors but not in 100% health.

2. Try Seagate's non-destructive HDD tests.
3. Power Profile. Set to all to never until you feel the machine is fine.
4. Unplug USB drives when you can.
5. Mcafee. If you feel it works for you, keep. I don't use their products.

6. LibreOffice is out of date. I update using Ninite.com Why?
Read https://www.howtogeek.com/201354/ninite-is-the-only-safe-place-to-get-windows-freeware/

Nice relatively clean report. Not much to worry about but to me, confirms the HDD might need replacing.

O.K. - I could use a little help, Please

Ran the Dell support and the Seagate Tools and they both “failed” my hard drive. So I need to buy an SSD asap. So what to buy. Looking around I got confused, does the Web Speccy help you to help me on what to buy? I think I only need about a 250 GB drive. Mainly because I have that TB external hard drive. Do I need to know physical “size”, 2.5, etc.

Dell Inspiron 3647

Regarding your finds based on the Web Speccy:

“Power Profile. Set to all to never until you feel the machine is fine.” - Don't really understand this part.

“Unplug USB drives when you can.” – Well, I use everything that is plugged in, so can't see what to unplug.

“Mcafee. If you feel it works for you, keep. I don't use their products.” – I don't use McAfee either, don't know where you saw this on the report.

“LibreOffice is out of date.” - Yes I know. I have a complicated spreadsheet and when I updated LibreOffice it messed it up. Granted that was a while back that I tried. I did update to latest, hope it doesn’t mess anything up.

Thanks in advance

Not sure what you mean by this statement?

The Dell Inspiron 3647 that I have is a "Desktop", sorry I didn't make that clear.

Regarding McAfee, on rare occasions, I have downloaded and ran McAfee, but I always uninstall. I looked in Control Panel - Programs = Not listed. I ran my Revo uninstaller program, not listed. I looked in C: Programs and it "was" listed. Tried to delete, wouldn't let me so I went into safe mode and then was able to delete.

So, if I understand correctly, any SSD in my price range will do as long as maybe its a brand name, 2.5 inch, and an SATA III

Thanks for the assist...

I know what goes with what.

McAfee is still installed according to the report.

Forums are wonky today so I'll check in tomorrow.

But still iffy HDD numbers there. Not failing but did fail Dell and drive diagnostics. My reading was see if the numbers were spooky. They were.

Great price there.
Jul 10, 2017 7:48AM PDT

I've used SSDs and so far the gains even with a sluggish write speed blow away HDDs.

My selection was 275GB for 99.99
Yours is 250GB for 89.99.

If we get into performance tests we soon have to move to the Samsung EVO models for more bucks.

Yup

You have to be doing some heavy duty writes before this starts to show.

When you shop for a ssd you have to think about things like.
Budget.
Storage space needed.
Do your apps do a lot of writes.
Other stuff.

Best to give it a little thought before pulling the trigger.

Getting a new ssd hard drive this Monday, sooo...
Jul 13, 2017 8:35PM PDT

to start out 'better', and since I have done it many times before, before I make an image, maybe do a reformate, to have a "cleaner" image. Being retired I have the time, and I could simple stop the reinstallation process before I would install all my programs and "then" make the "ssd image". And "then" install the "ssd". Continue that process, and "then" finish installing all my programs and resetting everything back to the way I like it.

Seems like a good idea - Yes / No ?

Thanks in advance

Keep it simple
Jul 13, 2017 9:40PM PDT

Just clone your working copy of windows that's on your hdd>ssd.

Remove the hdd and run off of the ssd, verify everything works.

If you muck with the hdd before the clone you might create a problem on the hdd and then clone the problem to the ssd.
