Maxtor OneTouch II Crashes Computer

by Annoyed_with_Maxtor / January 25, 2006 6:01 AM PST

I've been using a 300GB Maxtor OneTouch II for about two weeks now and I believe the Drive Lock feature is crashing my computer (running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005).

When I boot my computer and turn the drive on, I get the window to enter the password to unlock the drive then a message saying I successfully unlocked it once I enter the password. However, my computer then completely freezes to the point I have to turn it off with the power button (instead of a proper shut down).

I haven't been able to find any information on anyone else having this problem. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Dantz software and Maxtor drivers and utilities but still have the problem.

Maxtor One Touch II Problems
by nks2nd / January 26, 2006 2:26 AM PST

I have the same problem. My PC, most of the time, will not recognize the external hard drive. The few times that it does, I have trouble ejecting it.

I too would appreciate any assistance.

Yea, I failed to mention, I also have the "ejecting" problem when I try to use the "remove hardware safely" icon in the system tray. I've noticed in other forums and the Maxtor web site that this seems to be a common problem, although I have yet to find a solution.

RE: What happens if you don't use the Maxtor software ???

Well, now the drive seems to be functioning fine as a standalone drive with no Maxtor software (drivers or drive utilities) or Dantz Retrospect software installed.

This is great on the surface, but one of the main reasons I chose this drive was for the Maxtor DriveLock software that password-protects the drive contents.

Good to hear it's working ...better than NOT working.

Do you really need to protect the entire drive or just selected files ?

Perhaps another program can accomplish the backups.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
