maxtor one touch 2 password is GONE

Aug 10, 2006 6:09AM PDT

We were trying to use our Maxtor external harddrive on my iBook (OS X 10.4.7) this morning, for some reason it has never been recognizable to this computer even though it worked perfectly on the Powerbook. After an unsuccessful install attempt (yes, we went online for the Maxtor download) we could not get into the harddrive on either computer due to the password being wiped out. Not only was the password unrecognized but the security "question" was different from the one originally set, rendering that option useless. We called Maxtor twice - at first the technician had us reinstall, restart and try the password again. When this didn't work he said that there are sometimes password glitches but to keep trying on our own. We did this for two hours to no avail so I called again, this time I was told there are no glitches, nothing we did could have erased this information and that basically we could try recovering the files with a program but otherwise we are out of luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any theories? Has this happened before?

Yes. It's happened before.

You'll find dozens of posts like yours here. More on google.

It all comes down to this. You need to use something more relible than what they supplied. In fact, why the password on this? One can lock the drive up physically so adding a password layer to backup can be argued to be "something else that will go wrong."

Problems with software or what
Aug 16, 2006 1:21PM PDT

Was there problems with the software that came with the Maxtor One Touch or what.
Or is there problems with the External one touch drives it self.
I was thinking on getting one of Maxtors One Touch external drives.
But if the the regular external drives or more reliable than Maxtors one touch, Thats what I would get.
Thanks

Update on Maxtor
Aug 17, 2006 5:57AM PDT

I just wanted to let others know what's going on in the event that they have a similar problem. Yesterday we turned on the harddrive after leaving it alone for a few day and it worked perfectly - no magic beans or anything. While I don't trust it any further than I can see without my glasses (is trust measured in distance?), I am glad it's letting me in.

Well, on our Powerbook the Maxtor was a plug&play and did not require the CD at all as far as I can remember but my iBook didn't recognise it so I had to try and install it but for some reason, this just wasn't happening. Since we were unable to use the harddrive on either computer followed by being able to use it later I would venture to say that it was the actual harddrive. Maxtor also said that the attempted installation was unlikely to be the cause and was a coincidence - who really knows! I agree with the previous poster who said just lock the harddrive up in a portable safe instead of using the password as it's just another thing that can go wrong. Good luck Happy

Password
Aug 17, 2006 12:03PM PDT

I have a four hard drives in my computer and One is storage two is XP one is Vista.
I tried folder Lock to lock up my other drives especialy my storage drive, which you have to use a password to unlock and lock each drive or folder from prying eyes.
I have not had a problem with the password yet, or Folder Lock it self, But I would prefer and external drive to keep my important documents on. External drives has easy disconect & reconect if it is USB or Firewire Then I will not need to use a password.
And I was thinking about Maxtor one touch.
I will buy a Maxtor external drive but not one touch.

Thank You for the information:
Good luck with your drive:
