"Yup."

Hello Everyone,
I've seen several discussions about bad external drives, removing the enclosures, "clicks", etc... I think alot of this may apply to me also, but I'm not sure.
I have a Maxtor 3100 External 80Gb "Personal Storage" drive. I run a 500MHz PIII PC with Windows 98SE. The drive is connected via USB. Recently it was not recognized. I disconnected the drive (USB and power) and reconnected. The drive "beeped" for about 15 seconds and still was not recognized. I've tried a couple of things to get Windows to recognize the drive, but nothing works. Each time I get the beeps but that's all. I wrote to Maxtor and they simply stated the drive is bad. I too have used the drive for back-up and supplemental storage. I don't want to give up on trying to access it's contents.
Any sugestions? Could I also remove the enclosure and install as a slave drive?
