Maxtor 160 offered by Newegg

Jun 12, 2008 5:13PM PDT

The article on Thursday May 12, told of a Maxtor 160 gig portable HD from Newegg. After placing an order I was rapidly informed they were not available and my order was being canciled. It appears to be a scam to get you on there mailing list and entice you to buy other items from thier site. The 160 gig for $49 appears to be a hoax. Not only do they now have my information they are holding $50 of my money. I wish CNET would have researched the company fully before posting their atricle.

Mark: It was featured yesterday on The Cheapskate's blog on Cnet's news.com. (Link)

BSmith2447: I can assure you it was no scam. Newegg is a reputable, five-star company which frequently undercuts the competition. However, since they are so popular the can run out of a product quickly, so while you are filling in your payment information others may have already clicked the Submit button, causing Newegg to sell out. In this case Newegg was apparently selling off the last of their inventory on a now-retired item, which is why they had to cancel your order. They are usually good about refunding accounts, so the funds should be available in a day or two. (Banks typically drop such pending charges after three days anyway.)
