Question

Maximus VIII freezing

Mar 4, 2018 1:13PM PST

Hello,
Last week I reassembled my PC. Dual channel wasn't working at all before. Now it is. I also cleared CMOS after the reassembly. PC started freezing after 2 days of flawless experience. It freezes with buzzing sound, pixelated screen and code 04 (same thing happens when I remove RAM from slot A2 while the PC is running) or with code A0, which is more like complete lockdown. In both cases hard reset is needed. I figured out that I can give it temporary fix by reseating the CPU cooler. Then it works for a day or two and then start crashing again. Please mind that the exact same PC was running smoothly for about an year before in single channel. The bad thing though is that it now isn't working in single channel either.
Thank you for any clues.

My PC:
mobo: Asus Maximus VIII hero
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000Mhz
CPU: Intel core i5 6600k
GPUs: RX 570, 1070 GTX
PSU: Corsair RM 650x

What was the reason for the reassembly?

It's generally accepted you don't fix working machines. It can introduce hard to pinpoint issues like this.

After a year the heatsink compounds harden and it could be as simple as these are not working as well as before. Only a new tech points to temps. The seasoned tech redoes the work.

Tell more about why this was done.

Why

This was done because I bought an expensive RAM. Which was running at half the speed. I wanted to have it normal. Also I applied new thermal compound to the CPU and the cooler, so that probably isn't the issue.

Also temperature of the CPU is about 50°C underload.

Mixing memory sticks from different makes and models can lead to total hair loss. Very very frustrating to troubleshoot.

You removed the RAM

while the comp was running ? Did you replace the RAM while running ?
I would take this apart and bench test each part on cardboard.

I did not replace the RAM while running just took it out, because I am so frustrated with that and wanted to know what's going on.
