Question

Maverick

Jan 16, 2014 7:27AM PST

I need some help here. Do I or do I not upgrade to Maverick? Since I use a Western Digital back up drive is it safe? I read things about the software that was provided by Western, but I have always used Time Machine to activate the back up. What is this software from Western that is so apparently dangerous? How do I identify it and if necessary remove it? Once removed can i back up to Maverick without further concern, or is this still a subject as yet to be resolved.

Answer
That problem has been solved by Western Digital

and was only a problem if you used their software to run your backup solution with.

As you are using Time Machine, which does not use any of the software that comes on the drive, you will have no problem at all.

Personally, I used Disk Utility to format the Western Digital drive as OS X Extended (Journaled) which destroys any of the factory installed software and leaves you with a clean, empty, drive

Now go update to Mavericks, assuming your machine has the required specifications

Many thanks for the reply - much appreciated. i am pretty sure that only Time Machine is at work here, but in the My Book folder there is a file called WD SmartBackup - myPath Examination and another called Backups.backupdb. Is is safe to leave these where they are or do these need to be uninstalled? They appear only to be telling me what files are held on the WD Drive. The TimeMachine is switched on with backup preferences set to backup onto the WD Drive.
Sorry to be paranoid, but there is a lot of valuable data at risk if things go wrong.

What you are seeing is software that is stored on the disk

it is NOT in use if you are only using Time Machine and have NOT activated the WD software.

Yes, it can be safely removed but make sure that you are only removing that software.

Be aware that Time Machine stores your backups in a folder called Backups.backupdb. Open that folder and you should see another folder that directly refers to your iMac. (Jim's iMac or Wendy's iMac for instance)
DO NOT delete the Backups.backupdb folder.

FYI, for your really valuable data, you might want to consider copying the originals to DVD and storing it off site some where, Bank Deposit Box for instance or a Fireproof safe in the house.

Many thanks for that help. Think that progression is now possible.

Maverick problems
Jan 20, 2014 9:20PM PST

What no one seems to have mentioned is that Maverick is not compatible with the entire Adobe CS2 suite. Only discovered this on attempting to install. If I had not spotted the message about CS2 and pressed install, then I would have been into all kinds of problems. CS2 works fine for me, but since the upgrade will cost a considerable sum of money, I cannot see how Maverick is FREE. May be from Apple, but be careful it does not end up costing a great deal.

CS2 is so old that Adobe has turned off their licensing

servers for the product.

While CS2 may not be compatible with Mavericks, Mavericks is fully compatible with your Mac and that was the subject of your original question.

Had you mentioned CS2, there would have been a response.

Maverick and CS2

I was in no way criticising the information that you kindly gave me. Only stating that with all of the hype about Maverick, I had not seen it mentioned anywhere that there could be some old software that will not be compatible. And lets face it CS2 was not that bad. Certainly Photoshop still functions properly, but the latest version is expensive.

Understood.

I still use CS2 at work, Windows, but have moved to Pixelmator on my Mac.

Not as expensive as Photoshop but really effective
