Google finds nothing. Was this the main lyric sung by the artist or was it sung by the backing group? By armed forces radio do you mean AFN? Which would mean we are probably looking for a n American rather than a UK record.

cheers

Match song to artist...

This reminded me of only one song, although the lyric you quoted wasn't exactly what I'm thinking of. What you may be thinking about is "Get It While You Can" by Janis Joplin. I'm including the lyrics I found on-line in case they jog your memory. Hope this is the answer you're looking for.

GET IT WHILE YOU CAN -- JANIS JOPLIN

In this world, if you read the papers, lord,
You know everybody?s fighting on with each other.
You got no one you can count on, baby,
Not even your own brother.
So if someone comes along,
He?s gonna give you some love and affection
I?d say get it while you can, yeah!
Honey, get it while you can,
Hey, hey, get it while you can,
Don?t you turn your back on love, no, no!

Don?t you know when you?re loving anybody, baby,
You?re taking a gamble on a little sorrow,
But then who cares, baby,
?cause we may not be here tomorrow, no.
And if anybody should come along,
He gonna give you any love and affection,
I?d say get it while you can, yeah!
Hey, hey, get it while you can,
Hey, hey, get it while you can.
Don?t you turn your back on love,
No no no, no no no no no.

Oh, get it while you can,
Honey get it when you?re gonna wanna need it dear, yeah yeah,
Hey hey, get it while you can,
Don?t you turn your back on love,
No no no, no no no no, get it while you can,
I said hold on to somebody when you get a little lonely, dear,
Hey hey, hold on to that man?s heart,
Yeah, get it, want it, hold it, need it,
Get it, want it, need it, hold it,
Get it while you can, yeah,
Honey get it while you can, baby, yeah,
Hey hey, get it while you can!

The Lyrics

Telephone Man
Meri Wilson
(Wilson)

-Peaked at #18 in 1977 and was her only hit
-Sold over a million copies
-A "novelty" song
-Produced by Boomer Castleman and Jim Rutledge of "Bloodrock"

I went to my apartment on a Monday at one
A-singin' do lolly, lolly shicky bum, shicky bum
Started movin' in it on a Tuesday at two
A-singin' do lolly, lolly shicky do, shicky do
Wednesday at three I called the phone company, singin':
"Hey baby, put a phone in for me"
Thursday at four he came a-knockin' at my door, singin':

"Hey, baby, I'm your telephone man
You just show me where you want it and I'll put it where I can
I can put it in the bedroom, I can put it in the hall
I can put it in the bathroom, I can hang it on the wall
You can have it with a buzz, you can have it with a ring
And if you really want it you can have a ding-a-ling
Because-a hey baby, I'm your telephone man"

Can you believe that? And then he says:

"Now when other fellas call ya tell 'em how it all began"

Well...can you imagine?

My heart began a-thumpin' and my mind began to fly
And I knew I wasn't dealin' with no ordinary guy
So while he was a-talking I was thinkin' up my plan
Then my fingers did the walkin' on the telephone man

Singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Get it any way you can
Right? Ha ha ha, so...

I got it in the bedroom, and I got it in the hall
And I got it in the bathroom, and he hung it on the wall
I got it with a buzz, and I got it with a ring
And when he told me what my number was I got a ding-a-ling

A-singin' hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Hey lolly, lolly
Just-a doin' my thing

Ha, ha...I've never done anything like this before!

Telephone Man Song

In reply to: match song to artist

I had just about forgot about this song until I found this post. My hubby works for the phone company and it a telephone man. We had not been married too long when this song was popular. What really made it sound prevocative was the phone company had just come out with a bumper sticker for the telephone trucks that read "Let a Telephone Man Put it In". They had just started allowing the customers to install their own phones and the company was pushing the phone company doing the installing. So these two thing together put the phone guys in a sorta cocky mood, it you get my drift.
