The 614 was a fair model and the story you tell me sounds like it could be overheating. Try canned air on the vents and position it so it gets as much air around it. Don't bury it under a cable modem.
I just upgraded from my 5 year old router that was starting to lockup to a Netgear at link.

Seems nice.

Right now at our house we have our cable modem going to Netgear W614 v7 router from 2006, from there it goes wireless to my laptop and devices, but to my fathers desktop via Ethernet.
in the last few months I lose wifi signal few times a month and always have to reset it, the speed is slower than it was before wirelessly.
my internet is rated at 25mbp/s, my father's desktop connected with ethernet gets about 20-22mbps average. but on both of my laptops i only get 15-17mbps. even when his computer is off and I am the only one on the network.
but most importantly, we did a test with my father's desktop between being connected through router WIRED with NO other devices connected at all, and being connected directly from modem, and found that going through router was CONSIDERABLY slower. especially the delay between clicking on a click and the browser actually starting to load it.
Shouldn't it be almost the same through a router as long as no other devices are sharing the connection?
Seeing as this router is pretty old and i have all these problem do you think it is router-setting related? or just the model itself? routers are pretty cheap and I am thinking of getting a new one.
When i get the netgear one that I have now, I paid about $40, what are some good brands for under $60 router these days?
thank you!
