Mass hacking of corporate websites

Mar 8, 2004 4:17PM PST

Hundreds of Indian websites went off the web on Monday after a hacker managed to exploit a loophole in the firewalls of a web server and removed the data from the homepages. Most of the websites belonging to commercial establishments and software companies based in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala could not be accessed till Monday evening, as the server managers put up an error notice on the homepages.

Net-based enquiries reveal that the hacker, `TimeOut,' managed to hit the server with IP address 207.36.16.235 and brought down over 500 websites hosted on it. The defacer, however, posted only his email ID on the defaced homepages. It was not immediately known whether the data on thousands of pages of websites was corrupted by the cyber intruder.
