General discussion

Mark your calendars for August 27th!

Jul 30, 2007 1:44AM PDT

(From my mailbox)

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

This will culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 from 10:00 PM to 12:30 am.

Some say it will look like the earth has 2 moons. (Not true) It will actually look slightly brighter than Jupiter and have a pink or red color.

The next time Mars will come this close is in 2287.

The last time was slightly less than 60,000 years ago!

Another Mars story
Jul 30, 2007 2:10AM PDT
HISTORIC FOUR-MONTH ARCTIC MARS MISSION REACHES MIDPOINT: CREW SWITCHES TO MARS TIME

Halfway into its Mars simulation mission, the seven-person crew of the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS) on Devon Island in the high Canadian Arctic is now operating on Mars time.

On July 9, the crew began living according to the Martian day, sol, which is 39 minutes longer than the 24-hour Earth day. They have drifted out of synch with the rest of Earth and will gradually return to Earth time after 36 days.

Commanding the FMARS crew is Melissa Battler, a master of science in geology student at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

?Because the FMARS station is at 75 degrees north, it has no night and very little light variation in the month of July, so the day-night operational cycle can be rescheduled to correspond to that on Mars,? said Ms. Battler who is also president of Mars Society of Canada.

To simulate the longer Martian daily cycle, the crew has moved its own clock back 39 minutes per day, blacked out the hab?s windows between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to simulate night, and scheduled meals, sleep cycles, and outdoor work accordingly.

June 18, 2003: Count slowly: one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand.... You just got about 30 km closer to the planet Mars. ... (from your link)

I did watch the 'Red Planet' back in August of '03 and it was easily visible. But I don't know if it is visible now. I haven't checked.

Counter? Do you think this is a contest?
Aug 2, 2007 8:26AM PDT

Dan asked, 'Why are you so sure?' Good question, especially to a scientist planning a robotic trip to Mars.

I answered, not from my own strength or understanding, but from Jehovah's promises. You think that's foolishness, so if it were a contest, I would lose.

Let's see now. The seven deadly sins are lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.
the seven holy virtues are chastity, abstinence, liberality, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility.
So wouldn't the counter to pride be humility?

The old Church had its lists; the bible
Aug 2, 2007 2:21PM PDT

(as usual) has somewhat different information. The lists are not meant to have one-to-one correspondence.

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, idolatry, practice of spiritism, enmities, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, contentions, divisions, sects, envies, drunken bouts, revelries, and things like these. As to these things I am forewarning YOU, the same way as I did forewarn YOU, that those who practice such things will not inherit God's kingdom.
On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law(!)" (Gal 5:19:23)

that "plan" is the wrong word, and how that ties in with two other important but little-known theological topics. Fun stuff.

Jack, I recognize that your post is completely in character, but I don't know why you chose this opportunity to cop an attitude.

It is in the nature of forum posts that our errors are out there for the public to see and I fail to see that I did anything inappropriate in my post.

I'm sorry you took my question badly. I offer you...
Jul 31, 2007 12:59AM PDT

...my most humble apologies. It wasn't meant to be bad. I did utilize the link in her posting signature to send her the information on the 2003 Mars occurrence specifically for the sole objective so she could call attention to the 2003 incident instead of maybe a 2007 preconceived upcoming occurrence.

Again, my apologies. Maybe you can see fit to forgive me.

I twice posted replies to defunct members on account of not bothering to check the dates on the thread. I felt better about it when someone caught it immediately, since then no misleading info was left hanging.

Speaking of sky stuff in August,
Aug 1, 2007 1:26PM PDT

"Stage Set for Meteor Shower - August is the time of year to catch the Perseid Meteor Shower. It will peak on the night of the 11th to the 12th, with the intensity of around one meteor per minute after midnight. If you haven't seen it before, this is the perfect time to watch the show. With no moon visible, it will be occurring this year under ideal conditions. Put a blanket out on the ground facing in whatever direction the sky is darkest for you and lay back and enjoy the spectacle."
