Mark All Read, scroll tip

right click in the vertical scroll bar on the right, choose BOTTOM from the menu and immediately get to the bottom of the page instead of having to click the End key on the keyboard or manually scroll every time.

Works on IE but not Firefox :(

Thanks for the tip, however, Toni. Will use it when I use IE.

Take care,

(NT) (NT) PgUp-PgDn work on both IE and FF (NT)

And why would you use IE?
Apr 29, 2005 2:29AM PDT

Like hijackers?

Easier to hit End key anyway.

Been using it exclusively
Apr 29, 2005 2:33AM PDT

since day one on the net ten years ago, and never been hijacked and only received four viruses (two in downloads from author's sites and two via email...all were caught and discarded by Etrust (formerly free Inoculate IT) immediately.

Common sense is the key no matter what browser or mail program you use.

I've seen more people with hotmail, yahoo, and aol accounts over the years until just recently get hit with everything under the sun, so throw-away email addresses mean nothing to me.

I have Netscape and Firefox installed but only to check my website with. They are never used otherwise.

I avoid using IE like the plague. Slow, clunky and insecure. What's it got that Firefox doesn't?

I don't have slow and clunky at all

What's Firefox got that IE doesn't offer already or more? I've seen a number of pages that Firefox doesn't render correctly....not a problem with IE ever.

As far as I know...
Apr 29, 2005 11:12AM PDT

IE doesn't feature tabbed browsing, which for me is a huge advantage. (I think it does on Mac but I use FF there too).

IE does not display PNG correctly, though they claim it will in ver.7 and you can get some kind of plugin to force it to display them. Seems to me in this day and age the most popular browser should handle PNG and when it does internet graphics will take a big step forward.

My daughter uses IE and I am forever cleaning out the browser highjackers and other malware from her computer. Of course that may have more to do with the browsing habits of teenagers but still, there have been so many security problems with Explorer that I just can't trust it.

As far as speed, maybe they're even but Firefox just seems faster to me at displaying pictures and since I'm a graphics guy this is important to me.

Oh yeah, as far as I know there is nothing like AdBlock for IE and I find it indispensable. In general I think Firefox has better add-ons.

I've heard there are pages that FF can't handle but I haven't seen one yet.

Block Ads
Apr 29, 2005 8:14PM PDT

This program has been around for years.....and was always reliable for IE. Now includes a spamblocker for email, too.

http://www.adsubtract.com/products.html

I don't remember positively but I think the original version was free like ZoneAlarm has two versions...with the Pro having more features. I don't see the free version on their site anymore though.

As for the PNG graphics.....some of the graphics on my site are PNG types and they render just fine in IE6. If there are issues with PNG types and IE, perhaps the upgrade of IE7 has fixed it since it's due out soon.

Are the PNGs transprent or translucent?
Apr 29, 2005 8:43PM PDT

That's the issue with IE.

I just don't see any advantage to using IE, specially in view of the many security issues.

they're solid pictures
Apr 29, 2005 9:00PM PDT

so I guess I'm not understanding what you mean....I only have a few transparent background type pictures where the graphic blends into the background rather than show up as a black block over the background color.....such as what comes up on this error404 page I created (at the bottom are two graphics but they are .gif or .jpg types with transparent backgrounds). Most of the rest of my graphics are solid pics....(I don't have the pages up that have .png graphics published to the site yet, but they will be up by this afternoon....however, previewing them in various browsers such as Firefox and Netscape render them correctly)

http://www.pcwarfare.com/av.html (this is not a correct/legitimate page so you will get the error404 page instead)

Never have had a problem
Apr 29, 2005 10:14AM PDT

with IE. Like Toni said, it is more a common sense issue than anything. I take very good care of my machines, and I spend half my work time fixing other people's machines. I have gotten pretty good at it Wink

I began using Firefox on occasion just a few short months ago. I like it, but IE is still my main browser.

As you said, to each his/her own Happy

Another way
Apr 29, 2005 10:03AM PDT
End key goes to bottom and Home takes you to the top. This works in IE and FF (on my machines). The only downside is having to lift your entire hand off the cozy rest of your mouse to do so.Wink

Ctrl-End does the same, but
Apr 29, 2005 3:52PM PDT

they don't get you to the botton until the bottom has loaded. Can take a while on dialup.
