Mark All As Read. Not Working?

Mar 25, 2014 1:27PM PDT

I tried the "Mark all as Read" on Linux and Win95/98 forums and didn't see any change, even refreshed them several times.

Hmm, maybe I need to refresh the cookie
Mar 25, 2014 4:06PM PDT

I have 3rd party cookies blocked, so the only way it gets refreshed is if I turn that part off, get the new cookie, then block 3rd party again.

- Collapse -
Works for me too
Mar 25, 2014 8:42PM PDT

I allow all cookies only for the session. I set exceptions for a very few sites. All cache, history, etc, is dumped and with certain sites like anything google I exit and restart my browser ASAP.

I'm using Linux version of Firefox
Mar 26, 2014 4:42AM PDT

so maybe that has something to do with it. Not a big thing to me right now, I'll figure it out later.

right now on my windows computer
Mar 26, 2014 12:50PM PDT

At least I can get my account from it. On the Linux computer I removed my cookies, then tried to sign in and keep getting a notice about needing to confirm it. I'd changed my email address, and yes, I got a confirmation email notice, which I've clicked on several times, but never was able to get the Linux firefox into my CNET profile again.

So, don't change cookies or you may get locked out!!!

When I click on the sign in, I keep getting the not confirmed message with the new 404 page behind it on that computer.

Excellent point

I'm using PCLinuxOS and SolydXK, Should we believe that running FF on other than Windows OS
is different?

tried again today
Mar 27, 2014 12:54AM PDT

still getting the message that the new email addy needs confirmation. Still not getting any new confirmation email when I clk on the link for it. Still ending up at the "sorry dave...." new 404 page. All this on Mint Linux 14 using Firefox 24 browser which I tried to refresh the cookies on by signing out and back in. So far the Windows I'm using right now with Firefox 26 is working OK on CNET forums.

Were you saying you had the same problem on your Linux based computers? Maybe it's due to some encoding I use on that computer like UTF-8 instead of the usual Western, except I changed it back to Western on both browser and Thunderbird email, turned off spam blocker, turned on all cookies, (I do get some cookies set) and still no more confirmation email, the old confirmation never worked, and no sign in works.

Really
Mar 27, 2014 2:20AM PDT

sumpin' ain't right. Everythings still groovy with SolydXK, PCLinux, Sabayon and Manjero. You must have tweaked something. I don't mess with all of the settings though, maybe I'm a little lax in that respect. I use Adblock Plus and Gmail notifier but other than that I leave FF stock.

Sort of a work around
Mar 27, 2014 6:23AM PDT

I used my windows computer, used a different email address, was able to clk on the "confirm email" and get it, then forwarded that email to my Linux computer and from it did the "confirm". Unfortunately that gives me James_Denison since it required a "unique" identity. That means a different profile, so I guess I won't be posting from the Linux computer in CNET other than maybe this time.

Any suggestions on how to use the same identity from both computers? I might could pull the entire cookie file from the windows computer and have it overwrite the one in the Linux computer, but there's some cookies distinct to it I'd prefer to not lose and have to find all the passwords again.

What a pain this is!

- Collapse -
Oh, any new profiles also.....
Mar 27, 2014 6:35AM PDT

..... can't have spaces, must use underscore or a dash in them. So, if you lose your cookies and have a space in your profile, you might not even be able to sign back in.

- Collapse -
I use the same profile
Mar 27, 2014 8:56AM PDT

on both Windows computers, and the new Linux computer and 4 different distros , my cell phone too.
I can be logged in with the same profile on all three computers at the same time.
I don't understand

ya got me thinking here. I don't know if it meand anything but I sync FF on all Distro's and Windows computers with the Win 7 laptop.
Could that mean anything?

Hah, drop the cookies on a linux computer
Mar 27, 2014 11:55AM PDT

then see if you can sign back in after you removed all the CBS and CNET cookies you currently have. Or load Linux on a flash drive and see if you can open the firefox and sign into your account.

The sync is a good idea to try.

LOL
Mar 27, 2014 1:01PM PDT

no thanks. Like I said, I don't mess with the settings . But the sync option is pretty neat. I go from comp to comp and distro to distro or os and all bookmarks, logins, saved passwords , everything is the same . FF is FF , no difference , I have to actually look to remember what os or distro I'm using.

the problem with Sync
Mar 28, 2014 7:49AM PDT

is it puts all that onto a server somewhere, outside your computer. If that server is hacked and then someone can break encryption provided to those files, .......

re : the problem with sync
Mar 28, 2014 7:57AM PDT

I'm sure that's true Jame but isn't that true with everything else I do ? Online banking, doing my taxes online, gas, electric and phone, Amazon. I guess I'm out there prime for the picking lol. Might as well sync my browser too.

Nix on Sync
Mar 28, 2014 4:02PM PDT

Killed it on both computers now. Can't get my old profile back by no means. The new James_Denison one won't login because it claims it still needs a confirmation by email. Clicking on the send email in that message gets nothing into the mailbox. Maybe Verizon has CNET blocked? Seems I remember hearing that happening in the past. Had to create yet a third profile this time as James-Denison.

I can see my old profile here. I have no way to access it.

http://www.cnet.com/profiles/james+denison/

All this just because I wanted to add that avatar from gravatar and because I wanted to access the profile from more than one computer. I'm about ready to toss all 3 accounts!

This is crazy!!!!

someone like Lee Koo or one of the mods they can help change this,

OK, got one back
Mar 28, 2014 5:05PM PDT

The James_Denison one, but this is what I keep getting for my old profile James Denison and never get a confirmation email. I think if that would come and I clk on it, I could get back into the profile. If I try to login I get this notice and can't change the email address to one in the profile that might have better success on getting the confirmation email instead of the email address that won't. I even put cnet.com site on my "safe" list for the email server, but still nothing from CNET like a confirmation email.

http://glenburniemd.net/CNET/ConfirmEmailCnet.jpg

So, can't get a confirm email for my oldest profile James Denison and can't change the email address in the profile.

re reading this thread
Mar 28, 2014 5:19PM PDT

in reality all that you did was change your e-mail address right ? Maybe I'll try changing mine and see if it happens to me too. If it does we know cnet has a problem

I managed to get logged in
Mar 28, 2014 5:33PM PDT

to my old account by using the password reset. I was able then to put in yet a different email address at yahoo instead of verizon and I did get a confirm email from CNET at that email address. So, I clked on the link they sent and got delivered to this page.

http://glenburniemd.net/CNET/Arrgghhh.jpg

So, for now I can get to the old profile, I can change things in the old profile, but I can't post anything from it yet because the confirm emails they send out on it won't work, instead they go to an error page. Also, you only get the one, even if you end up at the place where you can clk for a new confirm page to be sent, you won't get it again. One time and that's it. So, if that one email gets lost, you are screwed on confirming and even if you do get it, you may still be screwed and sent to the 404 page.

I think it has something to do with older profiles with a space in them since any new profile you create isn't allowed a space in it.

- Collapse -
yeah but
Mar 28, 2014 5:44PM PDT

you weren't changing your profile, you were editing your e-mail address. That shouldn't do anything. This is a bug you need to alert Cnet about .

Mar 28, 2014 5:44PM PDT

The verizon email address wasn't working for it. I changed to a yahoo email address. First I got this notice which went to the 404 page when I clicked on it.

You have recently requested your email address be updated from *******************@verizon.net to ****************@yahoo.com. In order to complete your request, click on the link provided below.

I astericked some of the above for privacy. When I went back and checked later I found the next message. Seems there's a confirmation FIRST that you changed the email address, THEN later comes an email to get it working again.s

I'm leaving it alone, but my fear is....
Mar 28, 2014 6:08PM PDT

...that since I sent requests to several support contacts that it might get messed up now by someone trying to fix it.

Also, since I had to change the password which gave me an opening into the account again, and since I changed the email for the account, the avatar I had disappeared, because it's tied to the email address at gravatar. Stupidest setup I think I've seen yet for doing avatars! No avatar. No more messing with it for that. Not again. I'm off to bed now.

what confused me is why some links are red and some blue. The red links have been visited, but so have many of the blue ones. What's the defining difference between one being red and one being blue?

- Collapse -
Here's that other part that changed in the page presentation
Mar 29, 2014 4:52AM PDT

they must have activated followed links in their CSS codes, which wasn't before, or they used a subdued bluish color for it. First, what a CNET forum page looks like now, showing some posts that have been read with blue color for the links, some posts that have been read with red color for the links, some posts that haven't been read with blue color, and so on. Was confusing till I remembered you need to concentrate on the dots and not the link colors. Second is what I changed to get rid of the red colored links, but that means other web pages where I'd like links I've clked on to show, won't now.

I am finding some problems with the colors
Mar 29, 2014 8:24AM PDT

The colored dots, if I understand correctly, are to represent a person's activity in a thread. A green dot means it's one you've not viewed at all. A red dot means there has been additional activity since you last viewed it and an empty dot means there's been no new activity since you last visited. I do find empty dot thread that, when I enter them, have "next unread" in a post. When I click on it, it goes to a post...and there may be more...that I know I've already seen. I know this has happened if MOD activity has taken place but I do think I see it a lot more since the changes.

I found something too
Mar 29, 2014 8:34AM PDT

When I read something like your last post (only not yours) I can't remember his name but the guy you told how to hyperlink Steve. I clicked on his name to look at his profile and couldn't get it to show. Also all of my Tracked Threads are gone since I changed my login email address.
