Your empty paper that is to be printed on

is only a certain length, and width. The printer reduces the available space that it will print on by setting an invisible margin around the document, top and bottom, left and right. If it did not do this, the print head might sometimes print right off the page.

But that margin, (let's say it is an inch wide all round), is still usable by the Word Processor as it can over-ride the printer default settings.

But it throws up a warning if it is about to do so.

So if you are continuously getting this error message, it is the document(s) you are trying to print that is wrongly formatted, and you need to look again at what you are trying to print.

Hello,
I have the same problem and was happy to find that this topic had been addressed. Have read the responses, but still have questions.

The only time I seem to get this message is when I have choosen a page border. The border seems to be set by Word; is there a choice as to where it is placed?.

How do I find out how the margins should be set so that my text stays within the limits Word wants?

Two remarks:
- Often, you can just ignore the warning and things still come out satisfactory. Strange, but I've learned to live with it.
- If you set the margins in the print-screen to some very low value (.1) they will be refused and there's a button then to set them to the lowest acceptable value.

Need new printer driver?
Apr 2, 2005 10:48AM PST

I kept getting this message at work where I use an older HP laser printer. MS kept trying to "fix" my margins and I would end with with a 2 3/4" margin at the bottom. Our IT department finally solved the problem by installing a new printer driver (in fact, several, until they got it right).
