How is it connected?
I woke up a little over a month ago to a black screen and have yet to figure out a solution or cause. Listed below is my current PC setup.
Case: Corsair Crystal Series 460X RGB
MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
CPU: AMD FX‑8350 Black Edition Vishera 8‑Core 4.0 GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 1060
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 1 TB Internal SSD
HDD: Toshiba 1TB
Monitor: Acer LED 27 XG270HU
The black screen happened after current Windows update 1709. I noticed if I revert back to an old windows, my display worked again. Also if I kept the same Windows version 1709 and disabled my GPU (in safe mode) my display would work. So both Windows 1709 with my GPU driver together caused a black screen after motherboard logo (bios)....well so I thought.
In order to understand where I am at right now, below are things done up to date to get PC working again.
- Reset PC (disconnect cables, hard reset etc)
- Check connections in case and to monitor (even used other HDMI cables)
- "Repair Windows" option attempted, no results.
- Reinstalled Windows starting fresh on a new SSD. ( worked fine until both windows and drivers were updated)
- GPU drivers updated to latest and even reverted back to previous versions but neither worked with Windows 1709. (nvidia customer support)
- Bios updated on motherboard as Nvidia suggested it may be an old bios (had a previous version, asus customer support)
- PC worked with different tv's in the house w/ latest windows and drivers.
In conclusion to my troubleshooting, it appeared that my monitor did not work with the latest Windows and GPU drivers. Again if I reverted to previous Windows version, it works fine or if I disabled Nvidia drivers with latest Windows it would give me a display (big icons but a display).
In the meantime, since I wanted to play on my pc, I ran a very old windows version along with latest GPU drivers on the monitor that got the black screen. Every now and then I would attempt to update windows but kept getting black screened so I would just go back to old Windows and keep playing.
2 Weeks ago during one of my "update windows" attempts, I decided to hook it up to the tv in the family room and the display worked on it! Up to this point I did not think my monitor itself could be the issue as I would be able to get a display even tho it was an old Windows version and even hook up my xbox to it with no issues.
So I contacted Acer and told them where I was at with my current troubleshooting (that I had called Microsoft, Nvidia and Asus) and that their monitor seemed to be the issue. They told me to ship it out as it appeared I tried everything else which the next day I shipped it.
Skipping to yesterday....
Yesterday I received and email saying repair done! in which made me happy to hear but as skeptical as I am and wanting to know the cause to begin with, I called them today to ask details on the repair. The representative told me that they found nothing wrong with it after running "extensive" tests. I told him if they didnt do anything then when i get the monitor back, im still going to have the same issue. He directed me to call back Monday when their "level 2" team is open to escalate the situation.
So this is where I am at with my current pc/monitor black screen situation. If the monitor is "fine" as Acer states, what could be causing this black screen?
Any insight on the situation helps! I'm pretty much out of options with my current build. Very curious and frustrated on what could be causing this.
