Manufacturer and model question

Nov 6, 2004 9:41PM PST

My question is two-fold: is there one vendor that ranks higher than the others? Or in general, is it just personal preference? I am interested in quality, not features, and as such I would like to purchase a camera that has high quality, and great flexibility. In other words, I want above average quality in all forms, good light, low light, action pictures, etc. I am not concerned about video capture, or direct printing capability, (I can download pictures to my computer and do the printing, myself), nor am I interested in all of those "neat" features (multiple picture layout on the monitor, etc.)

So, in light of all of this, does anyone have any recommendations regarding a better than average camera manufacturer, and with that can anyone suggest an above average 5+MP camera up to $700, or so?

I already have a Kodak DC4800 (the zoom is broken on it, which is why I want a new camera), and I have 2 - 256MB Compact flash cards with it, so I would prefer a new camera that uses those cards, but it's not necessary.

"Does one vendor rank higher than others?"

General Motors, Ford, Chrysler

Ask three people and you will get three different answers.

The same goes for camera manufacturers.

...........

In the price range you mention:

And to be able to use those compact flash cards:

Take a look at the Canon G6

The issue with the CF cards is noted, but I would not want to limit myself to just CF card cameras since that means what it means and a larger camera. I know you paid dearly for those, but a 256MB card was under 41 bucks the last time I bought one and my Kodak DX6490 refurb was just 300. It's been very nice. I may entertain the DX7490 when it shows next year.

In direct answer to your question, no maker rules the roost.
