Is there a mid-range around a $1000 DSLR that you can control the focus? I want to take sports pics and want to focus on a spot, not auto focus. If someone knows of some models please list so I can review. Thanks....

Any DSLR can focus manually. You may need to use the LCD to initially determine the your focus point, because the optical viewfinder is not made for focusing manually, at least not well.

All DSLR cameras will let you set the camera to "matrix", "center weighted" or "spot" focus.
That works with auto and manual focus.

With some sports you may need to isolate the focus on one person in a crowd.
That is when you set the camera for "spot" focus.
Keep the main subject in the center of the screen.

In action sports you usually don't have a lot of time to manually focus.
I suggest you set the camera to auto focus and spot focus.
