Is Out...

Mandriva 2010 is out and better than before.

Always has the choice of different desktop environments so no need to have a KMandriva or GMandriva or any of that nonsense. Is perhaps the easiest or one of the easiest distributions around with a large selection or Repositories for CODECs, software and more.

Have you tried it?

How much better is it comparing to version 2009 spring. I ask because I am thinking of picking up a copy of 2009 spring because it's on sale.

I have download 2010 live but the thing is slow as molasses so I can't get a feel of what it is like.

Slow as Molases....

What do you mean? Running the Live Distro?

So far the reviews that I have read says that is faster. I can say, is better than 2009.1 as far speed.

Mandriva uses by default KDE and is version 4. The "problem" with KDE Version 4 is that is for more capable systems since has a lot of eye candy. Also comes with GNOME that is more Lightweight. Also has XFCE desktop environment for older systems.

What people seems not to grasp is the Desktop Environments.

Linux is a Kernel, so do not treat it like Windows (you have no choices on Windows, get stuck with what you get).

Other developers create Desktop Environments that works on Linux.

KDE got heavier since PC now days are way more capable and keeping with the times. As an example, do not expect to run Vista on 256 MB of RAM, see my point?

When you install Mandriva during install, there is a choice of Desktop Environments so pick wisely and know what you want. Is as simple as clicking on the radio button.

You do not get that choice on MS, they tell you what you want !

So in one DVD install, you have a choice of KDE, GNOME, XFCE, etc...

Now on the Life Distros, there are 2 choices, one is KDE and GNOME (there is so much that you can cramp on a DVD) so on the DVD name one says Mandriva KDE and Mndriva GNOME [ http://www2.mandriva.com/downloads/?p=linux-one ].

If you are a Ubuntu fan pick the one with GNOME if you like Kubuntu pick the one with KDE, but is KDE 4 (a bit heavier than KDE version 3).

If you want to install the full disto, it does not matter, just get the Free Version or pay 60 Euros for the one with the Commercial License drivers, firmware, software and such.

I just thought you might be using 2010 and...

want to hear what you have to say about it. No I am no stranger to Linux; I have been a linux user for a long time. The last box that I got was Mandrake 9 at Fry's but now you can only get it through the mail and the postage is very expensive from Europe (I believe it's about $27). Like I said, the sales is on version 2009 only which makes the postage livable.

Version 2009

The newer version the 2010 is much better. Granted, 2009 and 2009.1 were not their best. They were good but not their best. With the 2010 sure they fixed a lot of the bugs, but most of the bugs came from KDE Version 4 and not the distro per se. On the GNOME side was a better choice for 2009.1 (2009 was the dimmest bulb on their tree Grin )

Here is the page from Mandriva with what is on each distro.
