Managing/Sharing HD content from Canon Vixia HF200

I want to buy an HD camcorder such as the HF200 to make a video for my mom's 90th birthday. I am wondering how most people typically go about sharing such footage with others, as blu-ray disc writers seem a bit expensive and the format not adopted widely. Is it easy to record a Standard Definition video on a DVD once the HD video is in your PC? Or is it easy to move the edited HD video to a USB thumb drive? I gather it's easy to import the video from the camera to the PC and edit the footage and show it from the PC on a projector. But then wondering how to handle requests from family members who will want their own copy. Thanks.
