http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/25/mower.madness.ap/index.html

A 56-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of shooting his lawn mower because it wouldn't start.
Keith Walendowski told police he felt he had a right to shoot his mower.

Keith Walendowski has been charged with felony possession of a short-barreled shotgun or rifle and misdemeanor disorderly conduct while armed.

According to the criminal complaint, Walendowski says he was angry because his Lawn Boy wouldn't start Wednesday morning.

I kind of know how he feels. I wanted to shoot my mower today because it DID start.

Would he be in less trouble if he'd used a different and properly registered firearm?

Yes...

His big problem was being in possession of a sawed off rifle or shotgun.
In Wisconsin, mere possession of one is a class H felony. The law in Wisconsin says "For a Class H Felony, the penalty is a fine of up to $10,000, or imprisonment of up to 6 years, or both; however, for a repeat offender, the term of imprisonment may increase up to 2 years with prior misdemeanor convictions, and up to 6 years with a prior felony conviction.".
That's the State penalty, there are also Federal problems with his possession.

This was the topic of a Dead Kennedys song about a guy that shot his lawnmower.
The song was originally released in 1982. Twenty six years and the story- same theme different players- is being rehashed.
