Malware/Spyware/Ransomware protection for MAC

I am a fairly new MAC user (was PC/Windows for over 20 years). I have had some mixed messages regarding additional security for MAC.

I have been told that MAC OS doesn't need additional security as the OS already has built-in security that is sufficient and anything additional that is real time protection could conflict with the MAC OS.

I have also been told that the above is not correct and that I should have additional real time protection.

The two MAC security applications I have been exploring is Malwarebytes (premium) and Intego.

Any thoughts would be most helpful.

Thank you.

The most likely source would be

Companies that sell protection. "I'm telling you Mickey you gotta get our protection, ya see."

It's been a hoot to hear claims of a virus for Apple OS (current versions) as well, can't find them. You will find virii on Apple computers but they are usual in Word or such files and only work on Windows PCs. So true, there was a virus on the Apple. That's a stretch to get to the sale.

Be sure to keep asking about which you select (here I don't install any of these) as some are not what they claim to be such as MacKeeper (just no.)

If You Really Think You Need Such...

I've got a couple of customers who use the free Avira Antivirus for MAC program at the link below. I've got it installed on a couple of Windows machines here and it works fine. You can download and install and use it for free, if you'd like:

But as Bob stated above, there really isn't any current viruses that affect the MAC. The customers that have the MAC version of Avira installed have NOT found any malware during its use.

Hope this helps.
