No Problems But I Prefer...

.....McAfee's Stinger tool which has a larger set of viruses that it removes and is also free. It doesn't remove all viruses but it cleans up most of the major ones. At this point, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool only removes a handful of viruses but it appears like the list is growing. Currently, the Microsoft tool runs quickly and hasn't caused any problems on the machines that I've used it on...Then again, none of them have been infected and it would be interesting to know how well the program cleans infected machines.

I've use the Stinger tool on a number of infected machines and it works pretty well.

Scott, Can't Install Windows Updates? More Info Please
Sep 16, 2005 5:45AM PDT

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and in your case, HOW you are trying to install the Windows Updates...(Windows Update site? Automatic Updates from withing the Control Panel? Something else?) The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

Can you install other programs or is it just a problem with the Windows Updates site?
____________________

Try manually downloading the updates and installing them individually. In order to do that, you'll need to find the Knowledge Base Article number associated with the update, then search for the specific download page. For example, if you haven't already installed the newest "Windows Installer 3.1 Version 2", (for Windows 2000 and XP only), it will show up when you visit Windows Updates. You can also do a search for the installer number (893803) and find the actual download page.

Search for the download page by using the link below:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;kbjump

And you'll be able to navigate to the download page at this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

Of course, you'll now need to validate your computer which show you have a legal version of the operating system.'

Using the first link above, you can search for any of the updates, then download and install them manually.

Hope this helps.

Can't Install Windows updates
Sep 16, 2005 10:15AM PDT

Sorry. Using XP Home on HP laptop. System is very unstable with blanl IE screens poopping up and staying. I have Norton Internet Security installed with anti everything activated. 512 Meg memory. Microsoft broadband wireless network. I have Adaware SE Plus running as well.
I have run Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Recover several times.
Going to Microsoft website and selecting updates, I can select the updates and they appear to download and install, but the completion screen says they aren't installed.
I also have POW from Analogx to ko popups.

Scott, I Suggest...
Sep 16, 2005 12:03PM PDT

...turning off your pop up stopper while visiting Windows Updates..It's also possible, if you're using Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, that you have TWO pop up blockers working...If you're using SP2, then open Internet Explorer, click on "Tools", choose 'Pop Up Blocker", then choose "Turn Off Pop Up Blocker". Now try Windows updates.

Plus, your current pop up blocker doesn't appear to be doing it's job if you're still seeing blank IE pop up windows.

Another thought..instead of using Internet Explorer which could be "broken", try download a second browser, such as Firefox. You can install both and simply choose to run Firefox for normal surfing...(IT WON'T WORK at the Windows Update site but it might help with other sites.) Here's that link:

____________

You also didn't mention whether you had tried the manual download and install method. Were you able to download and install the "Windows Installer 32.1 VS" that I suggested?

Hope this helps.

Windows update
Sep 17, 2005 5:56AM PDT

Transferred the latest Windows installer to the laptop from my desktop and installed it. Also installed Stinger.
Started the laptop in safe mode and ran stinger, spybot, ad-aware in safe mode.
Restarted computer; same stuff all over again.
Found nsdgcljug.exe, nail.exe in windows directory.
I am about ready to reformat and start all over again-this time using Windows XP pro!
