Making my pc a print server

Dec 4, 2003 4:01AM PST

I am at work. We run windows xp on our network and I want to make one of the computers a print server. I want all the other computers to send their print jobs throught this one. How do I set this up?

A basis setup would be:

1) Set the printer on the XP machine to share
2) Run the Add Printer wizard on the other machines, choosing a network printer along the way
3) Set the network printer as default on each machine
4) Keep the host machine on when needed for network printing.
5) An easier and less resource hungry way is to use a print server device rather then a computer.

I have the same set up on my home network as described. It's a pain in the rump to have to have the PC with the shared printer on all the time, especially if that computer begins to encouter problems, which mine had.

I've seen cheap print servers for $100 but still too expensive for poor little old me. Although, I'm almost out of patience with problem PC and may still purchase one.
