Michigan triples deposit on beer kegs because of scrap-metal thieves

BAY CITY, Mich. (AP) - Buying a keg for your next party is a little more expensive. Large breweries have complained about losing thousands of beer kegs a year in Michigan because retail beer customers have been selling off the stainless steel barrels at scrap yards rather than returning them to stores to get their $10 deposit back.

As a result, state alcohol officials have boosted the deposit from $10 to $30, The Bay City Times reported Sunday.

How about this?

Forty years ago around Eastern MA, the kegs were used for buoys. The industry lost money due to dishonest people and boaters.

A new targt for thieves....

... in my area.

Beer kegs. They get $30 a piece for them.

Law enforcement is cracking down on the "fences" that buy stolen copper. I reckon they can add beer kegs to the list.

... by getting themselves electrocuted.

I also read this past week of an announced plan by all the US breweries to inform all scrap yards that the only way they will see "legally scrapped" kegs is if a brewery representative or official paperwork is with the kegs when they are turned in for scrap. This means bulk recycling and not a piecemeal couple of kegs every month or so. Sounds like the scrap yard who gets the business from the regional brewery will be sitting pretty.

Copper theft and drugs
Jul 5, 2007 5:30AM PDT

A few months ago 2 cousins broke into a switchyard and were stealing copper. One was electrocuted, the other left the scene, phoned in the accident, after they removed the body, he returned to the scene to steal the copper.

He was on drugs.
