Resolved Question

Make my external HD connect automatically at Startup

Sep 14, 2011 4:34AM PDT

At Startup I always get a question from User Account Control asking if my external HD can have access. Is there a way to have the HD automatically allowed access at Startup ?

Re: access

I've never seen a hard disk asking access to the PC. Usually the PC access the disk, not the other way around.
And I've turned UAC off, even in Windows 7. In Vista it was a disaster, of course.

So what's your OS and why does the disk access the PC?

Ext HD connect

I have Windows 7, and am fairly new to it. The external HD is just another storage device, and is connected to the PC via a USB connection. It is a Seagate device and has some management software that automatically runs when the HD is powered up.

That's a bad sign.

It sounds like something is AUTORUNNING from said drive. I'd look for and rename any AUTORUN.INF on that drive for a test run.

That's probably what my problem is, there is an autorun.inf file on the device. This is a HD I was using without a problem on my XP system that crashed & burned. Can I just disable or remove that file ?

Yes you can.

If you feel nervous about removing it, you can rename it.

But if you rename that file ...

that management software won't run automatically anymore. If you need it (you didn't tell yet), you will have to run it yourself from your Startup folder.
