Make Mail break lines

Hi (again)!

I have another question. Either my google-fu sucks, or there really isn't a way to make Mail in Mac OS X 10.6 break lines at a character length of my choice (like after 80 or so chars). My Mail doesn't break lines at all when I write an e-mail -- it just wraps them at the window border.

Please tell me I'm just missing some configuration option!

That's the way it works,

Mail will wrap at the limit of the window.

Of course, you can always hard break or you can set the window to be the width you want it to be.

Just out of mere curiosity, how do you ensure that the person reading your email has their mail window, or reading pane, set to the same size as you.

Outlook, that well known Windows email program, does the same. Big window, long lines, small window, short lines

I'm asking because there are many mailinglists in which you are required to break at a certain length (eighty chars, normally, on the debian mailing lists). It's been a feature of my former mail apps -- claws-mail and yahoo webmail interface. So I kinda took it for granted in any mail app. I haven't used that MS mail app you mention in over ten years, so I wouldn't know about it :).

I usually break my other mails at 75 chars, since this is the edge of the acknowledged magic character span in traditional typesetting. It's comfortable to read, perfect to print and very few people have windows too small to f this formatting up.

Doing this by hand is not an alternative for me. I get line-broken mail from people on mac machines. I guess they're using some other mail app.

Thanks a lot for your answer!
