Major VIsta Install Issue

I just built a new computer and I'm putting Vista Ultimate OEM on it. This is a fresh install. Strangely, it seems to be taking way too long for things to move from screen to screen. The product activation screen took more than 30 minutes! After all that I get to the screen where it sees both my seagate 400 GB SATA drives and I partition and format it only to have it tell me it can't install on it. What? I'm really lost on this one. Help me please! This is my first Vista installation so I don't know what's typical.
