Major problems after installing airport card...

Nov 22, 2006 3:51AM PST

Am I looking at big bucks here? Just installed an airport card in my G4 DVI 15.2". When I came to start up, there was that familiar whirr and then silence. Nothing. I decided to remove the card and nothing - apart from the screen lighting up in grey swirls and gradually settling down to a solid grey, with a band about 3cms wide of thin vertical coloured lines on the left hand side of the screen. That's it, nothing else. I cannot switch off using the power awitch and have to remove the battery. Just to check I put the airport card back in. This time nothing happens at all, but when I removed it again, I got the swirling grey and coloured lines again. Is there a simple remedy for this? (I know I am probably asking for the moon here!)

Any suggestions/tips would be welcome.

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,
I would be easier if we knew exactly what Mac you have. I know it has a G4 processor, DVI output (which makes it some sort of laptop and a 15.2" screen. I'm betting on a PowerBook G4, the first with DVI output.
Try this:

Press the Power button (

Hi, thanks, I'm new to macs so forgive my ignorance!

It is indeed a G4 powerbook.

I tried both of your suggetions but no joy - there is no startup sound either.

Are you absolutely sure that you put the Airport card in "Up the right way"

I believe it needs to be in with the Airport ID and Bar Code upwards.

Did you add extra RAM at the same time as the Airport? If so, remove it.

Try removing the battery, removing the AC power adapter and pressing the power key. Leave it for 15 minutes, attach the power adapter (no battery) and power it up using either one of the methods in the first response. Not success?
Repeat the above using the other method.

No extra ram installed, only thing I did was insert the card. Tried your suggestions - still no joy. Perplexed and feeling a large hole about to appear in my pocket....
