Open Control Panel. Open Modems, and remove all instances. While in control Panel, click System. Click Device Manager, find Modems, and remove all instances there. Close everything and do a normal power off. Open the case and remove the modem. Power back up and let Windows boot normally. Go back to Control Panel and make sure there are no modems listed. If so, run the modem installation CD or floppy. Now, power off and reinsert the modem. Power up and you should be good to go.

Hi, my Windows 98 refuses to detect my modem. Modems doesn't appear under Device Manager. When I installed an unknown device to the computer, the icon showed up with the name of my modem. I've been in contact numerous times with HP support, and have been given drivers. I get errors one way or the other, so I guess I'm basically asking if anyone knows how to install a modem from scratch.
