Major Glitch In Ad-Aware Definitions This Week

Mar 11, 2005 9:26AM PST

Although Ad-Aware SE Personal has generally been a reliable spyware removal tool, please don't run AdAware (seems limited to the free version) without extreme caution this week.

It's killing internet connections, running system restore isn't fixing it for all. Read the discussion at the Lavasoft forums below:

Hope this helps.

It's Affecting Those With 'Dialer.TIB Browser' Spyware
Mar 11, 2005 12:16PM PST

AFter reading the thread at the link above as well as the discussions elsewhere, it appears like the problem occurs when there is Dialer.TIB Browser spyware on the computer and Ad-Aware removes it. The removal causes the internet connection loss.

So far, clean machines are NOT suffering with the problem. Still, a removal program should correctly remove spyware without causing issues, so I'm guessing that Lavasoft will try to fix the problem ASAP.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info

I just went ahead and uninstalled my Ad-Aware. I just had a computer crash on me over an "issue". I mean I'm running Spybot and Microsoft Antispyware Beta. How many spyware programs does a person need anyway? I also removed Spyware Doctor. But I periodically run Trend, Panda, and Bit Defender. Thanks again.

How many you need

depends on the programs you use and where you go on the internet. Some programs are better than others. And if you use P2P services/programs, you had better be well protected.

Vesta, No Need To Uninstall It
Mar 13, 2005 3:37AM PST

It's your choice and your computer, but Ad-Aware SE is a good program.

Ad-Aware added a fairly new removal definition and when that particular spyware type "Dialer.TIB Browser" is removed, then the internet connection can be lost...Other antispyware programs are able to find and remove "Dialer.TIB Browser", but Ad-Aware is incorrectly removing the files that cause the infections.

I'm guessing there will be a corrective update from Lavasoft soon which will fix the issue. This type of thing, although not good, occasionally happens to most malware removal programs, including the popular antivirus companies. As soon as it's known to be a problem, it get's fixed.

Hope this helps.
