Major Airport issues!!!!! Please help!!!

Apr 12, 2007 9:16AM PDT

Here is the story. I close the screen on my iBook G4 (14'', 10.4.9) and it goes to sleep. When it wakes up, what was previously a full Airport wifi signal is now blank. It does not show any options to connect to, not even the one I connect to every day. I turn it off and on, it does nothing. So I do a restart, and when I log in again, the airport icon is Gone! The computer says I don't have it installed it on my computer. So I shut it down and leave it like that for maybe a minute. When I reboot, it usually, 60% of the time, crashes, so I need to shut down and reboot again. Then, about 10% of the time, it will crash apon it's second reboot. But if it doesn't I log in, and 50% of the time there is still no icon. Another shut down and reboot, and finally it shows up, with a strong signal!!! This is driving me crazy! It sometimes takes FIVE cycles to get it working again, and the Constant Crashes have me backing up all my data on DVDs every five days!
Please, somebody help me!
Thank You in advance.

Time for an Archive and Install
Apr 12, 2007 9:58PM PDT

Replace that system with a fresh one, bring it up to date and all your problems "should" go away.

If you need help with the Archive and Install procedure, just holler

Archive and Install

NO, not replace your computer. Just replace the System Folder on the HD and you will have a completely fresh OS to play with.
The procedure is called an Archive and Install. All your data, currently housed in your Home folder, is saved and replaced once the install is over.

I guess you have never heard of this procedure before. Do you have the OS X installation disks for your machine?

No, I haven't heard of this procedure before. Wink. I do have my OSX discs somewhere, but it will take some digging to find them.
So you are saying after I do this, my computer will be exactly the same as before I did it, photos, music, bookmarks, wallpaper and everything?

Archive and Install
Apr 13, 2007 9:49AM PDT

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying.
Scenario: You are currently running 10.4.9 and you have the installation disks that came with the machine or installation disks that you purchased.
Either way, you will not be able to install 10.4.9 directly. If you are lucky, you might have 10.4.6 install disks.
Whatever you have does not matter as long as it is 10.4.x

Boot the computer from the Install DVD by inserting the DVD, waiting for it to mount and then clicking on the Install OS X icon,
or
By inserting the DVD and rebooting the machine. At the chimes, hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.
Follow the install procedure, slowly, and it should tell you that you can only install this version if you change your options. Be sure that you choose Archive and Install and Save Network settings (words to that effect)
Follow the rest of the installer and on completion reboot the machine as directed.
All your data, music, photo's and other stuff that is INSIDE your home folder will be preserved and put back into their correct places. Your network settings will be restored to what they were and you will just go on your merry way with a new, fresh OS system folder.

The first thing you do after that is update the computer to 10.4.9 by using Software update.

It is really quite easy but do NOT proceed with the install unless you have selected Archive and Install. Failure to do so will result in complete loss of data.

If you need more help, holler

Good Luck
