mail system

I am curious about how default e-mail works. I use 98/MSN9/IE6. I use MSN mail as my default. I also have(from original config--outlook express and microsoft outlook installed -- I don't use either one). I don't know which program is dependent on MSN9 or whether I can delete express or microsoft outlook from my harddrive to help with system resources. Bare with the stupid questions, please. I'm trying to learn. Thank you,

Mej,

Just having these programs installed (present on your hard disk) does hardly effect any system resources other than the available space on your hard disk. That might be an issue with your machine, or just as well it might not. Generally, experts mean something else when they discuss 'resources' in Windows 98.

Anyway, you can uninstall MS Outlook by going to the setup on your MS Office CD. That makes sense if you don't use the program.
I wouldn't advice you to uninstall Outlook Express. It just takes very little space on your hard disk, and somehow is integrated with Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps.

That was a big help. Someone suggested that I need to wipe my hard drive free and start over (after I've saved my files to DVD) Is wiping free and starting over a good idea?

NO.

Saving your files to DVD is always a good idea, but I would sincerely advise to do a format and fresh install ONLY as a last resort, when all other means fail to solve a pressing problem which makes the computer disfunctional. It's not something to be done lightly, in my opinion.
