Mail quits (OS 10.6.1)

Mail quits unexpectedly when entering addresses from address book. A message appears "report - ignore - re-open" I normally click the re-open and it opens right away the message I was working on is in the drafts folder but some of the addresses are missing. I then finish the message and send it on it's merry way. This is rather annoying and never happened to me when using Panther. Any solution?

Also rather annoying is when you want to "clean up" a message before forwarding. Under Panther I just used the quote level decrease but with 10.6.1 it's quite a different kettle of fish.
Any easy work around?
