Question

Mail as Default app

Mar 17, 2016 11:51AM PDT

I have just set Mail as my default mail app, but when I go into contacts and select a contact, click on Email, I get the message that their is no email program installed or it is not set as the default. Do I need to restart Windows?

Answer
I would. However

I found the native Mail app so feature poor that I quickly abandoned it and moved to another mail app. There's so much missing in W10 Mail that no one I know uses it.

I agree

I agree but since I just bought the machine, I thought I would use Mail until I decide on something better. This just seems to me like a simple problem that I have been unable to fix.

Just checked.

Video

Thanks but the video only talked about Outlook which I don't have.
It also mentioned an online account which I am not interested in.

Yes.

And did you try the People App instead? Microsoft is getting very very pushy about the online account to make this all work. It's another part of the reason I bailed and went with Thunderbird.

People

The people app apparently requires an online account, which I'm not interested in. I realize that Micros#$t is forcing everything onto the internet, but if I need to store everything on the internet I will do it with a company that has a better reputation than Micros#$t.

A belated finding.

I tried to find a way around all this but the Mail app is so bad and then you are finding another bad thing.

Take my word about Ninite, Thunderbird and move forward.

I agree.

I'll try the thunderbird.
Another problem I've had with mail, my outbox is empty even though I've sent a few messages. I know they were sent because I've gotten a few replies. Most of the messages I've attempted end up in the drafts folder after I've gotten an error message about an invalid email address.

Thanks again for all your help

Well if your going to use MS mail

it works better using a MS account as contacts and mail sync. Eventually you will only be able to get apps from the store. You can download MS Live Mail which is free and can be downloaded outside the store.

Just rewatched it and at the 5 minute mark I see Mail.

My opinion? Install Thunderbird from Ninite. Why? Link.
