Mail Account with OSX Tiger will not work. Why?

Nov 19, 2005 4:04PM PST

With OSX4.3, no matter how I set it up with the Mail Account(so-called feature) will not go beyond the submit. What is wrong here?
I always get a message after using any or all choices:

The POP server (?my name, for example?) is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the ?Incoming Mail Server? field. If it still doesn?t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.
If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email.

Should I disable this feature of Mac Tiger?

Why is there a problem here? What good is it and what is it for?
Seems useless and a pain in the butt right now for me!

No, you should not disable it

You are setting it up incorrectly. I'm not sure why you are referring to it as "(so-called feature)" though. It is an email client that works well and has been in every OS X since 10.0.
You say, "The POP server ("my name, for example") is not responding.
The POP server should NOT have anything to do with your name in it.
In the preferences/accounts, check that you have all the fields set up correctly. The incoming mail server is the POP server address which will be something like (pop-server.comcast.com) or (mail.comcast.net). This information can be had from your ISP. The same applies to you outgoing mail which is the SMTP server. (smtp-server.comcast.com) or something similar. Check with the information from your ISP.
What were you using for an email client before you changed to OS X 10.4? This Mail program has been around since 10.0
The problem is incorrect information in the fields, it tells you that.
It is a good email program which works very well.
This has nothing to do with not being an IT person, non-tech people are doing this every day when they open their new Mac box and get online.

Pete, tried it again tonight.
Same results. Wonder why it does not work?
Have anything to do with adelphia.net?
And, no, you do not have to be a IT person to figure there is a problem here and how to set it up.

It has everything

to do with Adelphia.net

Do you have the SMTP and POP settings that they gave you?

These need to be plugged into the appropriate places in the Preferences/Accounts.

What email program were you using before you moved to Tiger?
