Madonna's giant cross 'offensive'

May 22, 2006 9:21AM PDT

The Church of England has criticised Madonna's appearance on a cross to kick off her latest tour in Los Angeles.
"Why would someone with so much talent seem to feel the need to promote herself by offending so many people?" said the church in a statement.

Madonna performed the ballad Live To Tell while suspended from a giant mirrored cross on the opening night.

David Muir of the Evangelical Alliance also accused the singer of "blatant insensitivity".

"Madonna's use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous," he said.

"She should drop it from the tour and people need to find their own means of expressing their disapproval."

Madonna's spokesperson was not available for comment at the time of publication.

This is not the first time the pop star's concerts have upset the Church.

maybe the bishop will call for all christians to sue herHappy

While I see your point ...

... I've got to disagree when compared to the alternative -- not saying anything. There's that saying about evil triumphing and all that.

I hear Madonna's tour is already a huge selling gangbuster. I'm not sure why anyone would go see her dreck, but they do. I didn't hear any advance press about this cross thing, so fans didn't go to see that, and any controversy isn't going to do much IMO.

OTOH, MAYBE enough people will ''find their own means of expressing their disapproval'' -- perhaps by staying away? She makes her home in Scotland now. I'm not sure if her wedding was religious, but she had her son Christened. It IS a bit much for her to make such a mockery of a religion for whatever sick kicks she gets out of it. The Church of that area (not sure if same one) has a place in criticizing her, IMO.

wouldn't go to see her anyway?

IMO, madonnas songs are like the rubbish outside the sea-food restaurant, dig long enough and you find a pearl Wink

her video clips are much the same...

True

I see this more in light that *a* Christian church in the UK christened her child (I don't know which one). They have every right to call her on this stunt. I don't think it will have much effect either way. But, on the off chance that some may think she's turned over a new leaf with the whole Kaballah & children's books, it's worthwhile to remind people how sick she remains inside.

I agree!
May 23, 2006 2:44AM PDT

What I think though is that her entire concept is rotten! Not because of the religion or the lack of the same, but the whole commercial focus. However she's not alone on the stages in 2006 being that way.

I don't think "it was better back then". I think there is a lot of great musicians, even among the young kids that are very good. Especially the REAL suburban rappers. I hear them every now and then on the "independent" radio and TV stations, but they rarely get a chance to get really big and reach out to the majority of the teens like Madonna and others. I guess and hope that they don't even care about that...

Can you name one example of these rappers ...

"I hear them every now and then" Meaning that I am not listening a lot to them but I am definitely open to their music.

And If I have to pick one song that would probably be "I Try". It's great lyrics and has a pretty good beat.

But then again. I am not a big fan of rap, but if I have to take sides among the kids of today I'd definitely choose the "independent"/hard core/heavy rappers before Christina Aguilera and Britney and Madonna!

Interesting ...
May 23, 2006 11:27AM PDT

... how that song is about wishing he could make a better living with his form of rap.

I'll give him this, at least the song lyrics I checked out weren't all about b!tches and ******. But the "we're so oppressed" tune is, frankly whiney and depressing.

Madonna is not a "young artist" anymore. I don't profess to understand who buys Brittany etc.

Little substance, little artistry, all flash and no bang (that's an explosive metaphor just in case it might be misunderstood). I pride myself on having enormously wide ranging tastes, but in my opinion, there's no there there.

I agree completely Rob!

You said it was maybe because of age... I doubt it. I happen to have passed a few big 0's and I feel the same as you. Age related? No, at least in my case I play several instruments and know quite a bit of music and what it takes to write a good song. And if you need all that "show" that Madonna needs, something else must be lacking. I love that Springsteen made a tour with just him and his guitar. That's "naked". No protection from smoke, sexy clothing, huge band or anything. BUT, it takes a good musician and performer to do so!

One more thing Rob...
May 22, 2006 8:58PM PDT

Many people that I talk to claim that she is such a rebel. I just feel that to be a rebel here in the US takes very little. In Europe it'd take rebellious behaviour and rebellious music above all! Something that really shook up the establishment. Here I think we tend to find people rebelious for making "student jokes". Sex is rebellious. The main and most important issues that we as a society have to deal with never really get exposed. The more sex, the more rebellious. Many of the rap musicians try to shock the audience, and manage to do so, by talking about sex. I hope you know what I mean Rob... Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and Peggy Seeger managed to be rebellious at their time. Isadora Duncan the same. And many rappers do so today too, but the main shock effect is either sex or religion. No real political rebells. Apart from a few like Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and others. ANd I know there are rappers too but I don't know their names at this moment.

REAL rebels.....
May 23, 2006 12:44AM PDT

...don't sit around thinking up ways to create controversy and outrage people. They just do what comes naturally and because it's so different, it might happen to outrage or simply make people look up and take notice. A classic example is Jimi Hendrix's performance at Monterey. There's a shot in the film of these two girls with their jaws scraping the floor in disbelief over what they've just seen. It's one of the pivotal moments in the history of Western music and he wasn't TRYING to get that reaction; he was just doing his thing.

If you're deliberately plotting to outrage you're just a sensation/publicity-seeker engaging in self-promotion.

I'll hop on this friendly bandwagon
May 23, 2006 1:40AM PDT

her strongest attribute imo is her 'reinvention'quality. she seems to have more personalities than sybil. year to year a different madonna. of course her name is indicative of her first rebellion. show business is no business but keeping the spotlight on the performer. I never was a fan, her music has no interest. but all her stage incarnations, like it or not, are energetic. I wish I could hop around at her age. I couldn't do it when I was her age.

sidenote: imbo her children should be kept out of the discussion. "sins? of the mother' do not apply. unless one believes someone's child should suffer eternal damnation.

the arts are subjective. we don't compare the mona lisa with comic book art. we like what we like.

Nobody is bringing her children into this
May 23, 2006 1:44AM PDT

However, her child is too young to have a say in the christening. This is an action of the parent. Madonna reveres the church enough to christen her child, then mocks it or who knows what to call it, by mimicking the crucifixion for her "act". Sickening.

Maybe they can do a reverse osmosis
May 23, 2006 7:13AM PDT

baptism and let the child stay in limbo. That would only encourage mom to release her long awaited 'love songs from the caribbean'. the child prays it doesn't die before attaining age of reason. it works for me.

- Collapse -
Why would you suggest such a thing?
May 23, 2006 7:59AM PDT

I'm certainly not advocating recinding a baptism or anything of the sort. Just think Madonna is pretty lower than low to use the Church to her advantage/benefit when it suits her then turn around and denigrate it for personal gain. I pity her children.

- Collapse -
Good. Then let ME bring her kids into it.
May 23, 2006 11:00AM PDT

She's on record as having said that she won't allow HER precious little darlings listen to her assorted vulgarities. It's too damned bad that her solicitude doesn't extend to everyone else's children; I guess that the power of gold blinds her to the fact that what she believes is objectionable to her kids is every bit as objectionable to our kids.

What utterly cynical hypocrisy...
