Madonna's giant cross 'offensive'

May 22, 2006 9:21AM PDT

The Church of England has criticised Madonna's appearance on a cross to kick off her latest tour in Los Angeles.
"Why would someone with so much talent seem to feel the need to promote herself by offending so many people?" said the church in a statement.

Madonna performed the ballad Live To Tell while suspended from a giant mirrored cross on the opening night.

David Muir of the Evangelical Alliance also accused the singer of "blatant insensitivity".

"Madonna's use of Christian imagery is an abuse and it is dangerous," he said.

"She should drop it from the tour and people need to find their own means of expressing their disapproval."

Madonna's spokesperson was not available for comment at the time of publication.

This is not the first time the pop star's concerts have upset the Church.

maybe the bishop will call for all christians to sue herHappy

The Church should learn how to use

Do you think they know by now that their public condemnation of her just fuels the flames of the fans and lines her pocketbook?

How is this even remotely similar
May 22, 2006 9:03PM PDT

to Islam?

Mark, you keep bringing Islam up. Over and over. Madonna and Islam have very little in common. As far as I know Madonna belongs to some Jewish organization even if she wasn't born Jewish.

Umm... missed the point?
May 22, 2006 9:15PM PDT

Mark was comparing the Christians to Muslims in the respect that the Church could learn to raise as ruckus as Muslims have done in the past when they feel offended.

You seem to enjoy getting into clashes with Mark.

I am more curious why you HAVE to involve the Muslims in EVERY post about religion. Your hate towards those people must be so big that you probably have nightmares about them!

Mark, let's try to isolate each case for what it is. And in the case of Madonna she's just another jewish believer (at least she claims to be so) and hasn't even brought up the Muslims.

When talking politics - Leave Kerry out of it (he's not the president and I know you think that is good).

When talking religion don't always involve Islam and especialy not when the topic has nthing to do with it as was the case here. She's a Jew (converted) and that's what you should focus on!

LOL! I just stated my opinion about Mark's way of constantly involving issues that aren't discussed. If that makes me a boss, please let Lee know. I don't feel like a boss. My income from CNet is definitely not like a boss'. I may have a good income, but not from here Ed. That I can assure you!

Excuse me Mark ...

... but this is about the same analogy as trying to compare Gonzalez stating reporters can be prosecuted with some action by the Gestapo.

Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc., all have their beliefs. You don't have to agree with them, but they deserve to be respected in that people should not go out of their way to offend them or misrepresent them. The "going out of their way to" is the important part of that sentence, because we would all be walking around on pins and needles and turn to mutes if we couldn't do anything that *might* be seen as offensive by someone, somewhere.

The reaction on the part of Christians is entirely different from that of radical Islam. Nobody is calling for Madonna to actually be hung from a cross, or for Dan Brown to be ritually mortified for their actions. The Islamic rioters, OTOH, are calling for beheading of any who even chuckle at a Mohammed cartoon. HUGE difference dontcha think?

It is not stupid for the church that christened Madonna's child to publically rebuke her disgusting behavior (they shouldn't have christened the child, but in my experience there will always be a liberal church to be found that will perform such -- it's more disheartening that Madonna hasn't outgrown her penchant for offending that which she seems to seek). It's not stupid for the Catholic Church and Opus Dei to oppose a work of "fiction" that "names names" and paints a pretty inflammatory picture of them. It's barbaric for the radical Muslims to resort to violence against all the infidels. But surely you can see just how ridiculous your comparison is?

Please don't continue it.

Sueing for libel ...
May 23, 2006 1:28AM PDT

... is not even remotely equivalent to violent riots, calling for beheading, etc. I'm not sure what you are talking about with the Jews, but I would bet there was outrage from the ADL, and don't underestimate the contributions Christians are making every day to wipe out antisemetism.

It's not about questioning faith or the strength of one's faith.

In the DaVinci Code case, let's say Oliver Stone decided to do a ''fictional novel'' about YOUR unit (using its real designation and the real names of the members) in Viet Nam. He showed accurate newsfootage of TV reports of the day, beautiful accurate portrayals of the landscape, etc. Only he decided that the ''fiction'' would be that your unit murdered innocent civilians. Do you THINK you might be offended? Do you think a disclaimer might be in order? How about if Oliver Stone MC did that movie centuries from now and your unit still existed? Might you be offended or at least want a disclaimer that it is fiction??? That is no different really than what is done in the DVC book/movie.

I think the calls for boycotting are wrongheaded, but harmless. NO comparison to the reactions of the Imams and rank and file radicals. The continued comparison IS offensive. I'll ask again to please refrain from making it.

So you would find the Oliver Stone movie ...
May 23, 2006 3:48AM PDT

... I suggested *funny*??? Somehow, I think not.

I understand it is fiction. But they didn't even bother changing the names.

There's nothing in the Church's response to the book or movie that bears even a passing resemblance to Islamofascist tactics/behavior.

I understand you believe the Bible to be fiction, and the faith parts can indeed fit the definition for many. But much of its content is indisputable fact (e.g. Jesus was a real person whether or not you want to believe anything else about him). Opus Dei is a very REAL organization. It has every right, even a responsibility, to refute slanderous "fiction" about the organization.

I agree...
May 22, 2006 9:18PM PDT

this sort of imagery has been used countless times by artists of all kinds in the past. I'm sure Madonna was thinking, "What can I do to outrage people, cause controversey and get lots of publicity." They fell for it.

That's basically what she does for a living
May 23, 2006 12:37AM PDT

She does these things on purpose just to be outrageous and create exactly this kind of publicity for herself. It's vintage Madonna.
