MacOSX 10.6.8 update crashes

Jun 25, 2011 3:06PM PDT

Updated my MacPro to 10.6.8. After it almost completes the boot process, it just shuts down. In safe mode, it completes and I can login in, but within minutes it just shuts down. System log suggests something to do with the default vpn client, but I tried removing it from start up and it still happens. Used Time Machine and install DVD to revert back to 10.6.7. Would like to get the issue resolved so I can upgrade to Lion.

You can try the manually downloaded version
Jun 26, 2011 12:06AM PDT

You can try the manually downloaded version of the update. While I don't necessarily buy the superstitious reasoning some people have that claim them to be more reliable, since AFAIK, no one has actually done anything even remotely resembling scientific testing to try and show that it couldn't have been any of the other possibilities... It seems to work for some people. I may not buy the reasoning people use, but it is hard to argue with results.

Just go to Apple's support page, and from there you should be able to find links to get to a downloads page, and you'll find the 10.6.8 updates in there.

Mac OSX 10.6.8 disabled my mac pro
Jun 26, 2011 12:09PM PDT

I downloaded and installed the new 10.6.8 update on my mac pro 3.1. The grey death screen appeared upon restart and nothing seems to be able to bring the computer back. At the mac store, they had to erase my program disc and re-install the operating system. the computer would boot now. I used migration assistant to restore my apps and settings from the backed up system disc and the crash problem returned. This is agonizing! has anyone else had this problem?

10.6.8 crashed my system as well
Jun 27, 2011 10:08PM PDT

I had the same issue. The only way back to square one was to insert my install DVD and reinstall. I then upgraded back to 10.6.7 and things are running as normal again. I did try the the combo updater to 10.6.8 one more time before going back to .7 but I got the same result. What are the specs of your system? Mine are below...

Also have problems with 10.6.8
Aug 2, 2011 6:02AM PDT

Is there a way to upgrade from 10.6 to 10.6.7 without going thru each intermediate step, i.e. 10.6.1, 10.6.2, ... ?
Thanks for the help.

same problem here

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER"> I've had the same exact problem several times on my iMac (circa 2007), I guess the answer is to just go back to 10.6.7 and stay there, or get a new computer eventually...
