MacMini won't take a change in password on wifi net

May 7, 2008 6:44AM PDT

I changed the password on my regular D Link wifi router and all computers accepted the change including my MacBook, except for the macmini. I can I change the passward in the mini to match the new password on the network?

Thanks

Password

Have you opened the Keychain Access program in your Utilities Folder? Look for the file with the name of your wireless network and you can delete it, reconnect to your network, and re-enter the password. That may work if the keychain item is not working.

Or, go to System Preferences and under the Network Pane, select AirPort, click Advanced, and double-click on your network name. This may prompt you with a message asking about your keychain and after accepting, it will bring up another window with your network name, your security type, and the password. Try changing the password there as well. Let us know how that turns out.

It says there was an error
May 7, 2008 11:38PM PDT

Hi

I tried as many different permutations as I could conceive that every try resulted in a message that says there was an error in connecting to the network. I can see the wireless. I can communicate to the internet from other networks. But I cannot communicate to the internet from my DLink wifi on my MacMini. This is not related to the problem on the MacBook where I am actually able to communicate with the internet on the DLink but cannot communicate with the internet on my Airport Extreme.

What now?

And thanks for your help.

Regards,

Tom

What wireless security do you have enabled?

WEP or WPA?

Security

Does changing the security type or disabling it completely affect its ability to connect to the internet? Will the Mini work on other WiFi networks? If we can determine where the source of the problem is, be it the router/internet connection or the machine, things will be somewhat easier.

It seems to work on other nets
May 9, 2008 1:35AM PDT

Hi

It works on other networks, just not mine. And before I changed the password it worked on my network. Then I changed from a Linksys to a DLink and I believe I had to change from a WPA to a WEP and the password had to change and voila! No connectivity.

If the Mini functions normally on other networks...
May 9, 2008 8:12AM PDT

The problem lies with the networking equipment. Either your Mini is not configured with the right security (maybe it uses WEP when the router uses WPA, etc.) or there is something else that it out of place. You said earlier that all of your other machines can connect to the router, so check your security types, just to make sure you're using the right one Wink.

It's probably something simple like this if the router works with everything else and the Mini works on other networks... Does Console (you'll find it in the Utilities folder) report anything unusual while you attempt to connect to your network? Might as well check that too.

Switched over to Extreme
May 9, 2008 11:36PM PDT

I just switched the mini over to the Extreme. At least it signs in. Now it has the same problems as the Macbook. It too cannot see the internet.

At least we reduced the problem set from two to one.

Now to attack the settings on the Extreme.

Networking
May 10, 2008 3:30AM PDT

Let's get some things straight:
1. Your Mini (and MacBook I presume) are functioning normally from what we know
2. Your Mini is unable to connect to your regular router while everything else can
3. Both Macs cannot connect to your AirPort Extreme device

Sounds like your networking hardware is at fault. You may want to look around for interfering electronics such as 2.4Ghz wireless telephones or other wireless networks that may be broadcasting in your area. I guess you could reset all of your router/Extreme's settings, but that would be a hassle if you already have everything else it set up. You would just need to locate the problem, which we are still doing...
Is the Extreme device one of those Extreme base stations (router) or one of those Express models (a wireless network extension unit)? I haven't had much luck with those Express units. Had one once and while I was tinkering with the settings, it just up and died on me.

All set
May 10, 2008 6:07AM PDT

Hi

I thought my message was posted but it was not.

I reset the Extreme control software.

Then I put both Macs onto Airport extreme and they both connect to the internet.

Many thanks.
