Macbook really slow - Showing HDD nearly full??!!

May 22, 2015 2:11AM PDT

Hi folks wonder if someone can help. Have a MacBook Pro (2011) running Yosemite. Mac has a 1 TB HDD. Recently it has started to slow down dramatically and getting really hot. In "About this Mac" it's showing there is over 750GB free but Disk Utility saying I only have 18 Mb free???? Has got me completely baffled! Can't seem to find what is eating up all the storage and trying to run any searches on the laptop is taking forever. I'm using my older iMac to send this message add the Macbook is running so slow. have downloaded AVG and the scan has been running for the last two hours! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Charley

Share a screen shot of what you are seeing in DU on imgur so folk can comment further.

As to heat you can move your canned air routine to daily for a week, then weekly for a month and then back to monthly. If you ask what is canned air or say "never done that" then it's time to start. These are not maintenance free laptops.

Installing more apps like AVG should make it run slower. Some like Norton or Mackeeper will finish off the machine.
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435 REPEATS THAT IT WILL GO SLOWER WITH SUCH ADDITIONS.

Thanks for such a quick replay. Whilst I have had Macs for years I must admit that I'm completely thick!! file://localhost/Users/charleywood/Downloads/Screen%20Shot%202015-05-22%20at%2016.25.04.png

Hopefully you'll be able to see the screenshots?!
I have never heard of canned air before and wouldn't have a clue how to initiate this process. This laptop, whilst a 2011 model, is a brand new replacement straight off the shelf. (insurance claim). Furthermore, whilst it has an i7 Processor it was much slower to load than this old 2006 iMac.

Hopefully this info will help to ID the problem.
Many many thanks for all your kind help.

In the CNET Test forum until the forums change up to a new version.
http://www.cnet.com/forums/test/ is where you can see how we will soon allow pictures.

There are tomes on the web about canned air and use on laptops. Even 1000s of ones specific to Apple laptops. If you never did this, then I'd start today to avoid the service counter. Start with daily for a week, then weekly for a month and then monthly. For me it's a 1st of the month ritual.

I've had a wee look into the canned air maintenance and will make a point of doing this on a regular basis.

Thanks again for your help. I greatly appreciate it. Hope to hear from you when you get a moment.

Kind regards
