Macbook RAM upgrade

Nov 30, 2006 5:01AM PST

I was wondering what the difficulty of upgrading the RAM in a macbook was. I called my local apple store, and they said that 2 gigs of RAM for the macbook would be $350 I checked Newegg, and after double checking that the RAM was the right type, buying two 1 gig sticks came out to be about $235 with shipping. Can I use these? Here is the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146126
Also, is there any way I could sell the slightly used 1 gig of RAM I would replace when I upgraded? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Why not just add 1Gig?

As to selling any hardware, that answer is usually yes. Ever hear of ebay?

Wish I could!

Well, the problem with just adding a gig is that the macbook with 1 gig of RAM comes with 2 512 sticks, and there are only 2 slots. Adding the $175 to add 1 gig might be too much money for now. I need to upgrade later. Too bad I can't get them just to put in a 1 gig stick. Any idea what a pair of slightly used 512 meg sticks would sell for? And do you think buying slightly used RAM is a good idea, or does RAM have a short life?

Hint: Ebay

Do a search on ebay and see what such sells for. Ram lasts as long as machines need it. I rarely see it burnt out except for the usual reasons.

What Lazerborg is doing about getting 2 sticks with 1 GB each is correct as it creates a SO-DIMM which gives a slight and free performance boost. Sow hat he is doing is correct.

Secondly as for selling on ebay or any other auction website, make sure you make your auction page look attractive and stuff. and yes keep safe! I wish I could sell on ebay but I cant as I live in the UAE.

The RAM seems to be alright just check on your instruction manual or on Apple's website for what RAM type to put (the speed an type like DDR 2 or ECC checked etc). But as you have double checked itthen it seems to be fine. You could ask newegg's sales staff if this RAM is compatible with your Mac.

There are many ways of selling RAM. You could put up a cheap local ad or something. You could put some ads in front of your Mac store. Best of all you could ask your friends or colleagues if they want to upgrade.
