MacBook Pro: Shell not properly attached?

Oct 6, 2007 3:36AM PDT

I have had my MBP for many months now, and it is occurring to me that the part of its casing is coming off where the infrared port and latch are. And for those who don't understand what I mean, it's up and to the left of the disc drive. When I purchased this MBP, it had already been like this, so I decided that it wasn't a problem or it was supposed to be like that. Well now, it appears to spreading along the edge of where it started. You can push it a bit, right on top of the latch, but it solves nothing. What's more is that apparently, the entire shell/casing of the laptop is coming apart! Now it's all screwed together of course, but several places above the latch and the ports lining the sides are not staying together cohesively. And it wasn't like this beforehand. the new models at the Apple Store don't have this problem.

I have the APP, even though it's still in its first year. Software wise, it has no problem, and the system itself is working great. But this hardware issue is slowing getting worse, and you can only tell if you've used it a lot or know what to look for.

This is a pre-Santa Rosa model running at 2.16Ghz which has been replaced by the 2.2Ghz model with the Nvidia cards. Mine has the ATI card. This is becoming a nuisance, but as Leopard is almost out, there are bound to be some new upgrades in a few months to the MBP line. But if you wait in the tech world, you'll never get anything, so I figure I should take it to my local Apple Store. But is this worth all the trouble? It defintely seems to be getting somewhat worse as time goes by.
Thanks,

Today, soon, not later so Apple Care can cure that for you.

Apparently, my power button is deformed. Literally. It sinks down on its left side and makes it hard to push. This seems to be new as well as the case problems.

Plus, I have found a need for the 2.4Ghz MBP with the Nvidia card. I also need a larger HD for all of my editing and entertianment stuff. My guess is that they'll just send my laptop in for repairs and will give me a refurb, but I hate refurb stuff. I need a new out-of-the-box one to replace it. I doubt they'll do it though, since I have a 2.16Ghz model.

Because of my warranty, is it possible for them to let me upgrade it for a more reasonable machine? I'm willing to pay for the extras of course. But they ought to give me en extra RAM stick since I paid extra for the now standard 2GB. LOL... I doubt this may work, but who knows? I'll wait for Leopard and get that for free LOL.

Again, think it's possible?

What I mean is will they allow me to upgrade it
Oct 9, 2007 8:17AM PDT

since my machine's hardware is beginning to fail on the outside. I'm not asking if it would be good to upgrade. I'm asking if it can be done, since they no longer make the specfic model of my laptop.

(NT) Look and see if they make a habit of that.

My bet is that you will get your machine repaired.

It is only usual for them to replace a machine if it is truly a lemon and has been back for major repairs on a number of occasions.

Right now, yours does not fit that criteria. Betcha Apple has lots of spare cases for that machine.

Unfortunately, the warranty and AppleCare only cover parts and labor, not a machine upgrade.

However, they have been known to do some good things.

Let us know how you get on.

Okay I'm going to try to take it in,

but I'm willing to purchase the upgrades. They have been good though, considering they let me get 10% off of any items in the Store when they sold the Touch that they were supposed to hold for me. Saved a bunch when I finally got it and some much-needed peripherals.
