MacBook Pro hard drive supposedly failed

Oct 10, 2014 8:37AM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro 2009.
It was working fine and then I restarted it, and it was stuck on the startup screen, with apple logo and spooling circle.

I brought it to apple Genius Bar. They trouble shot and came to the conclusion it was my hard drive that failed.
So, with their advice I went to best buy and installed a new hard drive .
Took it back to apple store for then to install new software.
They were unable to install it.
Again, they said it was a bad hard drive even though it was brand new.
So I went to Best Buy and installed another new hard drive.
Today I tried installing the start up software myself and again it didn't work.
The screen had a circle on it with a line through .
Apple tech said it may not be the hard drive but another other hardware issue!

Has anyone had this happen to them?

Please help!
Any advice would be awesome!!

Yup.

It was a well worn MacBook and a new HDD didn't solve it. It was the logic board. There is a test I do with another PC/Apple to check out the HDD. Most of the time techs can not do that since the owner didn't have their stuff backed up. That is, well, a shame.

The test I use is not cheap. About 150 at shops around here. Can really upset folk that get a replacement drive for 60 bucks but like a car, parts are usually less than labor.

This is why I look at used units like http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MacBook-MC240LL-13-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B001P05NJC That's about 230 bucks. Cheaper than the logic board at the bar.
