Question

MacBook Pro Doesn't Recognize My Camera or iPhone 4s

Mar 26, 2014 4:14PM PDT

I cannot download photos from my camera or iPhone to my MacBook Pro.
I had no problems with downloading photos, but now the MBP does not recognize the camera or iPhone or list them on Snow Leopard's devices. I suspect I did something wrong when setting up Cloud, but I cannot find the problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
iCloud has nothing to do with your ability to move

photo's from your camera or iPhone.

Take a look at iPhoto Preferences and make sure that "Connecting camera opens:" is set to iPhoto

If it is already set to that, change it to something else, close iPhoto, reopen and set it as above.

Any difference?

Do you use a Card Reader or do you connect the camera directly via USB? If the latter, do you have another USB cord for the camera?

In iPhoto, preferences, General, it says:
Sources: (x) Show last (12) months album
( ) Show item counts
Double-click photo: ( ) Edits photo
(x) Magnifies photo
Rotate: ( ) ^ (x) ^ (to the right or left)
Edit Photo: (In main window)
Email photos using (Mail)
Connecting Camera Opens (iPhoto)

Under "sharing",
(x) Look for shared photos
(x) Share my photos (this was off and I turned it on just now)
(x) Share entire library (this was off and I turned it on just now)
Status (ON) (this was off and it came on when I did the above)
That "Sharing" may have been the problem. I'll let you know. I am a 77 year old "senior citizen" and have been very busy today. I'll test it out and get back to you.

Under "Advanced", it says:
Importing (x) Copy items to the iPhoto Library
(x) Embed Colorsync Profile

I connect the camera or the iPhone via USB. Whatever is causing the problem is not with the cords. I did try using a different cord on both camera and iPhone. I really do appreciate your help, but I am totally exhausted right now.

That did not help.

On the iPhone there is a setting "My Photo Stream" which says: "Automatically uploads new photos and send them to all your iCloud devices when connected to Wi-Fi. (Which it is connected to Wi-Fi) iCloud may not be set up correctly, but that does not explain camera not loading to MBP.

For now we can forget about the iCloud

Let's try some basic stuff.

Repair Permissions. Launch Disk Utility, it's in the Applications folder in the Utilities folder.
Once launched, select your hard drive in the left hand column and hit the Repair Permissions in the right hand pane.

Connect the iPhone/camera once done.

Zap the PRAM.
Disconnect the iPhone/Camera
Shut down the MBP, and locate the Control + Option + P + R keys. You will need to hold all these keys down later.
Start the MBP and IMMEDIATELY press and hold the Control + Option + P + R keys. Keep them down until you here the startup chimes twice more. (Three in total)

Connect the iPhone/Camera once done

Thanks for the reply, mrmacfixit. I haven't had time to try your solution, but I will and will post the results here.
