Question

Macbook pro angry buzz - why, what & how to fix?

Jun 18, 2012 5:41PM PDT

Help please
My beloved MacMolly seems to have caught a (fatal?) illness.
It's a Macbook pro 15 inch purchased June 2011 so it's fairly new (produced early 2011 according to About this Mac)

I had left it hybernating for two hours (by selecting sleep from the menu) When I opened it, it worked for about 10 minutes then a very loud "electrical angry bug" sound came from it and everything froze. (I was trying to load a few heavy www's at the time).
First I tried to just close down the screen which helped but as soon as I reopened it it started again and everything froze again.
I ended up shutting it off by holding in the button. Then I let it rest for ten minutes and have now started it up again. So far, 10-15 minutes in it seems fine. But what was that? And how can I fix it?

Earlier I have had a blue-screen issue where it would go into blue screen and had to be force closed down as well. That problem was solved when I installed OS X.
Help please!

Were you running Windows on this machine?

Ps.

I may add that I live in a country where we have issues with power and therefore experience powersurges. I never leave the Macbook plugged in when I'm not around and always unplug if power goes off so it dosen't get "zapped" when power comes back. But still. The flow of power keeps fluctuating and I've lost a couple of phones on that account. - Don't think this is related but figured I would add it to the post.
Thanks again

Hard to say for sure

Hard to say for sure without having actually heard the noise. It could have been the fan kicking up to high speed for some reason, or it well could have been some kind of electrical issue. You did the right thing by shutting it down and letting it sit for a bit. I would say that if this is a one-off event, and you never hear that sound again, forget about it. If it starts happening more frequently, then you'll want to take it somewhere to get it looked at.

Well, I have no idea what the buzz is all about, but since your Mac is only a year old, there's a good chance you might still have a few days left in under warranty. Take it back to the Apple Store right away and have them address the problem.

Is the sound coming from where the HDD is?
