Macbook

by falsepretense / June 23, 2007 9:11 AM PDT

I am planning to get the Macbook that costs $1,099.00, could you give me your opinions on it and other apple computers?

(just ideas)

Is it easy to use?
Can it play ANY games?
Does it slow after a while?
Should I wait for leopard?

Thanks:)

It has the 950 GMA (graphics) and while any game you buy for it under MacOSX should be OK if you were to dual boot into Windows then it will have all the issue you read about 9x0 GMA graphics.

To get out of the basement for games you have to slide over to the Pro.

Is it easy to use?
-> I can use it so it must be easy.

Can it play ANY games?
-> Yes.

Does it slow after a while?
-> In my few decades on computers, all seem slower after a few weeks.

Should I wait for leopard?
-> I am.

There must be thousands of pages on that question. For me it's that I can run my apps and my development software with Parallels and skip Vista for a few years.

1. Easy to use? Yes, though if you're used to Windows you may need to spend a few days breaking old habits (first tip: those white disk images are like packages - you open them and then put what's inside where you want it).

2. The basic Intel graphics won't be a good pick for Quake 4, World of Warcraft, and so on. But you can play lots of earlier games well.

3. Slowdowns might happen if you fill up almost all of the hard drive, or you add a lot of programs that run in the background. But the "decay" you see in Windows isn't there.

4. Don't necessarily wait for Leopard. Remember, Apple will probably have to squash a bug or three when Leopard is released. You could be fine at first, but you'd better not mind being the guinea pig. The one reason you might want to hold off is that there will probably be an upgraded MacBook shortly after the new OS hits, but that could be as late as November.
