MAcafee updates with Mozilla browser

Jan 11, 2006 6:21AM PST

I am running XP Home and the Mozilla Firefox browser. I have tried to update the Macafee anti virus def. file. When I do, I get a note that says I am running Netscape (which I'm not) and Macafee wants to install something.

I questioned Macafee and they told me to convert to MS's IE browser. I do not view this as a solution.

Any suggestions?

I suspect

that MacAfee is programmed to do it's updates in IE not the other browsers.

If that is the case, the choice is [1] use IE only for your AV updates or [2] find an AV which will update in any browser.

I do not know enough about MacAfee to categorically state the above, but if that is the message you are getting, you now know the reason why.

Two Things You Can Do...
Jan 11, 2006 10:37AM PST

First, as David suggestion, McAfee's Virus Scan required Internet Explorer to be the default browser..You can still use Firefox to do all your net surfing but in order for their updater to work it's best, you should change so the Internet Explorer is default.

If you choose to not make IE the default, some users are able to install the plugin from the link below so that Firefox will allow the updates to occur. It's worth giving it a try as many have used it successfully in the McAfee forums although McAfee doesn't officially support it.:

In addition, if you choose to manually update, it's not necessary to install the plugin or change anything.

Hope this helps.

Mcafee update problem
Jan 11, 2006 10:52PM PST

I will try your plug in and see what happens.

You mentioned updating manually. Please explain. I thought I was doing it manually as I went to the program and clicked "update".

I don't mind doing it manually so please tell me how.

Manually Updating Current Versions Of Virus Scan
Jan 12, 2006 12:35AM PST

The method you describe allows you to choose your time for updating McAfee and yes, I guess you could consider that manually updating vs ''automatically'' updating but you can actually download and place individual files on the computer physically update the virus definitions manually if you ever need to. Since you didn't tell us exactly which version of Virus Scan you've got installed, I'll assume it's either retail versions 8, 9, or 10. (You can determine your version by RIGHT clicking on the red ''M'' in the lower right, choose ''Virus Scan'', then ''About''. Below are links to the manual update methods for the versions above. Both versions use similar methods but have slightly different file placement locations.:

How do I manually update VirusScan 8 & 9?

How do I manually update VirusScan 10?

Hope this helps.
