Mac, WebCams and Messenger

Jul 8, 2005 12:22AM PDT

Hi All! I am on Mac OSX have bought a Genius Webcam, works great both on my Pc and Mac. I can have fantastic Video sessions using MS Messenger on my PC. I refuse to switch to the PC platform. Is there any way I can "Video Chat" with my Mac with my MS Messenger Buddies?

This is an issue.

I'm using OSX 10.4; when a friend wants to chat with a cam using MS Messenger, and sends an invitation to view his web camera, a message from the service prompts me to install the latest version to view.

The latest version isn't available for Apple computers.

The problem is usually solved by moving to Yahoo Messenger, but some friends don't use Yahoo.

Would Mercury Messenger get around this problem? Or would the same compatibility issue exist regardless?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm not sure about anyone else here, but I haven't found a Video Chat client yet that supports MSN (.net). If you want to RECIEVE video,I don't know about sending it, you could try using Mecury Messenger, I personally don't like it, but hey, that's just me.

Alternatives With Webcam Support.
Jan 7, 2008 1:03AM PST

I'm mac user...

I've been scowering the net looking for alternatives to MSN, so far, only these two work well to me with webcam support and most of the features MSN had on my PC.

http://www.mercury.im/ (Mercury messenger)

OR

http://www.amsn-project.net/download.php (Alvaro's messenger)

When I used aMSN with my built in iSight, the webcam function only worked once until it blanked white. This may have been corrected in the new version(0.97), which i haven't tried yet.

Mercury 1.9 makes my MacBook run slower than usual and even CRASH.. Which it almost never does otherwise, but i found that it was a lot like Pc MSN, which was good. AMSN also made my pc run marginly slower but the program itself is very slow and clunky.

If anything, Microsoft should update their Mac Messenger to the latest PC one.

Grr.

Still prefer Mac though.
