Mac /TomTom problem

Mar 18, 2007 8:58AM PDT

I have recently purchased a new Mac with the new intel processor my problem is when trying to update the software on my Tom Tom sat nav when plugging in the USB cable to the Mac it will not recognize the Tom Tom as any sort of drive whereas there was not a problem on my old Windows PC.

I would be gratefull if anyone could throw some light on this for me.

Thanks.

Contact them

While their website claims that on Windows is supported, they do have a section that has a step by step account of how to connect the device to a Mac and how to update it.

It's worth a call to them

TomTom problems with Intel Macs
May 1, 2007 3:52AM PDT

I have a similar problem. After I had successfully connected my TomTom 910 to my Intel iMac several times, TomTom Home crashed repeatedly, and the iMac would no longer recognize the TomTom drive as connected. When I wrote TomTom support to ask for help, this was their response:
"We would like to thank you for your message to TomTom Customer Support. I understand that you are experiencing problems with your TomTom GO 910 not being recognized by the computer. We are more than glad to assist you!

The reason why I asked you for that information is because we have detected a compatibility issue with the Intel Core Duo processor, it uses a different architecture than the G4/G5 Mac processors. This architecture (i386) is the normal PC architecture so the Mac OS had to be completely redesigned or hybridized to work with it. Because of this reason is that we cannot guarantee that TomTom HOME will work free of problems. Our developers are already working in a solution for this issue.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused."

To date, more than a month later, they have neither contacted me with a fix nor put any warning on their website.

TomTom problems with Intel Macs

There is a workaround for this problem. Connect the TomTom either to a USB1 hub or to an Apple keyboard's USB1 plug. Connect the hub or the keyboard to the Intel Mac.

Now the TomTom should work (albeit more slowly than it did with the USB2 connection.

The TomTom incompatibility is with OS 10.4.9's USB2 routines. The workaround uses USB1 rather than USB2.
