Mac Problems

Aug 6, 2005 1:22AM PDT

I have been having problems with the Tiger OS for a while and I'm thinking of doing a fresh install of it again to hopefully fix some of the problems. I have heard that there is an Archive option when you insall that lets you save all of your data. Is this true and does it save bookmarks and addresses and music and whatnot or not. Also do you need another hard drive to back up and archive onto if I want to do this. Thanks!

Archive and Install

This option is available in the install process and will save all your data and settings to a special file. If you already have Tiger installed on the HD, the default option for installation will be Archive and Install. If it isn't, make sure that you check the box. Do NOT proceed with the install unless you have a check mark in the Archive and Install option box. The installer will then replace the old system folder & files with a whole new set. Once that is completed, the installer then takes the information it stored and puts it back in the correct place. On restart, all your documents, addresses, bookmarks, music, photo's etc.. are back where they should be.
You will, of course, be taking the OS back to 10.4.0 and will need to apply all the relevant updates via the Software Updater.
What were the problems you were having with Tiger??

The problems I was having were my mail didn't work, some sites did not work with safari and software update would not work.

Archive and Install

Once you have completed the Archive and Install, you will probably find that there are still sites that do not work with Safari. Do you remember what the URL's were?
Hopefully the Mail and Software update will be working when you are done

Good Luck

Check Mail preferences

After you update, open Mail preferences and check your settings. That should clean up any problems in Mail.

Mail and Safari problems
Aug 18, 2005 10:12AM PDT

I generally keep a copy of settings that worked previously on mail
and double check my current setting against them if I run into problems.
After I upgraded to Tiger, I went to my Powerbook, opened Mail preferences, and copied those settings symbol for symbol to the mail settings in Tiger. This way, you know you have a working mail client.
If Archive and install did not work properly when you upgraded to Tiger,
your'e going to either have to reset your settings manually or import them form a working copy of Safari on another Partition( you did partition your boot drive, right?)
The last and most painful fix is to erase your boot drive, Zero all data and start over. It's more about time than hassle as the OS is a breeze to install but you will have to put in all your settings back in manually. manually
Good Luck!
